Hello, My name is Mike Hill, this thread is being started today (Oct 30th 2011) to tell the story of two Superbirds that I was Lucky enough to buy from a nice older gentileman here in my hometown back in Jan 2007 . I'm sure my posts will "jump around and wont cover all the details in order, however Ill try to post often, and include some of my pics of how I came across these two birds, How I was able to buy them also pics of the recovery of these birds, along with restoration pics, its gonna be along story... But a good one. After lurking here on this forum for a couple years , I've finally got enough story+pics+info to share with you guys. now Some of you I have met at events, such as Doug S., Doug C, Troy,Corndog, and a slew of others that i know faces but cant name names.... as for us maybe you know us as the "father and son team, (we have attended several events, always together, starting back since he was eleven, (hes now sixteen) and we are still always trying to gain knowledge on these wing cars. ) again, this thread my not be in a perfect timeline... but ill try to do my best to show off some of the hundreds of pics of our 2 birds that were "pulled from the woods of S.C."
Ill start by posting a few pics of the cars, as I found them, back in 2007. again "its a long story"
 :popcrn:

That must have been some sight when you first walked through and saw those wings sitting there. I can only imagine what you were thinking! :o
Great story, thanks for sharing!
Sweet !!! Great story.... Two more 'Birds now off the endangered species list............
Wanna trade one for a '69 Charger 500? You'd have two different Aeros. :D
Very cool find cograts! It looks like there is a lot of cool old iron sitting there. :2thumbs:
hey Mike--Doug Croxford. Good to see you landed here!
How's the car coming?
That's awesome. I can't wait to hear about how it all came together. How you found them and such.
Ryan
I would love to have either of those birds!!
Wasn't there a thread on the board here about these cars from before Mike bought them? I seem to remember there was a Hemi Road Runner involved.
Didn't the guy go by the screen name of Harry T or something like that?

My head is spinning right now! What an incredible find and able seal the deal! Congrats.
Awesome find man :2thumbs: looking forward to hearing the rest of the story
Welcome to the board. Met you and your son in charlotte back in 2007 I believe. We were discussing these two cars at the hotel. Then talked to you again down at Talladega.
Yep, I see allot of old friends on here now... Doug C..."yep I'm finally posting..." Troy.. I remember talking to you at Talledaga, and yep Stuart, that was me and my son at Charlotte...(Petty signed my wing inside the museum.).. and yes, there was a thread way back posted by the guy I bought them from.. he was trying to find fair market value before giving me a price.. turns out someone on here "rubbed him the wrong way" by saying his post was a bluff and he didn't own two wing cars... he(the owner of the 2 birds) made the comment that said something like..... I remember back when I drove these cars, PEOPLE WERE ALOT NICER....and lastly, there was a third car involved... a 68 Hemi roadrunner.... But that car is off the market for good (its gone)... I promised him that i would not discuss that one on here. Anyway, I thank you guys for the warm welcome. Below, im going to paste the "long version" of how I was able to buy these cars, and also i feel about how I have tried to raise my son, (in a "old fashion"and respect others attitude,) it seems like it was a good payoff for my son and I.
I really owe thanks to my (then ) Eleven year old son for our good fortune.
Below you will find the story of how I bought the two birds NOTE: THIS FORUM WILL ONLY ALLOW FOR 9000 CHARACTERS PER POST, HAD TO POST IT IN TWO PARTS
PART 1
This is the story of how I bought two Superbirds from a nice older man here in my hometown( I had known about these cars since I was in high school, (1983) and remember seeing them parked up on a hill, as you passed by your could just get a glimpse of the wings from the road.) I had been told by many people that the man that owned them was a "mean guy", BIG DOG in yard and would meet you in front with a shotgun if you even pulled up in in yard.
The local story was that the guy had been bugged by so many people about the cars, that he had drug them back in the woods behind his house and they would NEVER be sold.
Well, in 2006 my son (then eleven years old) and I bought a 1969 charger and also bought the daytona conversion kit sold by Stinger fiberglass. ( to build a Daytona clone), well, I am no body man, and I was at a complete loss at how to even begin to hang the nose cone on the charger.
one day I was in our hometown post office and I saw an older friend of mine ( which is also into cars) and i told him of how I had bought the daytona kit and he said, " ya know, if you go up to this guy's house, WITH THE PARTS IN YOUR TRUCK , PROVING YOU ARE TRULY WORKING ON A WING CAR CLONE, HE MAY LET YOU LOOK AT HIS CARS......
I figured, what the heck, so that afternoon, my son and I , loaded the truck with the nosecone, z brackets, headlight buckets and drove to this guys house, just as i suspected as soon as he heard my truck pulling in his yard he came out the front door........ I was kinda speechless, my son was worried to say the least....
the first words out of my mouth was .... "Sir, My son and I are working on a Daytona Clone and I was told that you may still have a Superbird back on your land".... HE QUICKLY SAID, "NOPE, DON'T HAVE ONE.......................... IVE GOT TWO OF EM. ...... I quickly jumped out of my truck and reached in the bed , and lifted the fiberglass nose cone over my head to show him I wasn't "pulling his chain".... He walked off the porch , looked at my parts and said, what do you need to know?
"how does the nose attach to the car" i asked. He said , "First off, MY CARS ARE NOT FOR SALE ..... UNDERSTOOD??? ".... I said "yes , i do, all I'm asking is if I can take a few pics of your car so that i can hang the nose on mine."..... he said, got your camera? I almost snatched the door off my truck, ( quickly motioning for my son to get out the other side and follow us...., as we walked back in his yard there was a grave yard of old cars and jeeps, then back in some DEEP BRUSH , I saw the two wings appear.... I really felt my heart race , even though i knew they were not for sale, just seeing them sitting side by side really got my adrenaline pumping.
He said, "there they are" that's my children," take all the pictures you want , just don't show them off to people , Ive been approached by over a hundred guys over the years, and i tell them all , "not for sale"..... I said , I can respect that, I also added," I'm also sure you know what you have here....."
Yes, I do he said, ...he then went on to say how he was sick of guys over the years , saying" how much for them old Plymouth's??... you know they are not worth much'....... I laughed and went about my business snapping pics of the nose cone , z brackets, mounting bolts, etc....
so, as I'm on my back , under the car taking pictures, the old guy starts talking to my son, asking him , where he went to school, what were his hobby's, etc. I must admit, my son is a very well mannerd boy , and I felt good when he answered, "yes sir, no sir"" I like helping my dad with cars". ( i didn't know how important that last line was until later.)..... I added that my son is a straight "A" student and he was big into riding dirt bikes...( little did i know , that the old guy was a old motocross rider also).... he and my son talked about different things for the next ten minutes, while i took over 100 pics of the nose of the car..... when i was finished , I dusted the dirt off my clothes and I told him how much i appreciated him taking the time to allow me and my son to see his cars and taking the pics. As we walked back to the truck , he told me how impressed he was with my son and how he liked the fact that we did things together. .....as I got in my truck, i reached over and took one of my company business cards along with a ten dollar bill and handed it to the man. he said, "Whats this for?" , I said, i know you didn't have to let me see those cars, ...but you did, and your time is worth something...... he offered me the ten dollars back and I said, I'm also giving you the ten dollars just so you will KEEP MY CARD, I know your cars are NOT for sale, BUT, IF for some reason you ever decide to send your "Kids" to a good local home. (talking about the cars). give me a call, or if its twenty years down the road, call my son.....lol. " I will give you YOUR price for them."
PART 2
with that said, my son and i got in the truck and drove home., NOW i must admit, i was still shocked from the site of seeing two real superbirds , "sitting side by side" in the year 2006 , right in this guys back yard..... My son , realized (by my ongoing chattering ) of how rare of a site he had just witnessed, .... in the weeks and months after that day, my son and i on almost daily basis, referenced that day, how dazed i was from seeing the birds "sitting side by side" ... my son would say, hey dad, how about those two birds sitting side by side in the woods, and when it rained and we were working out on a project car he would say, " ya know those two birds are sitting in the rain....side by side......fast forward about six months later, It was Jan, 2 2007 and my phone at work rang, i was taken back by a voice that spoke quickly , "hey , if you're still interested in those two birds, I'm ready to sell them to ya." at that point I felt a rush come over me, I asked , if he was at home, he said yes , so I said, 'Ill be right over". Now i have heard of story's of guys letting cars slip through their hands due to not "sealing the deal " right then and there, so here i leave work, (didn't tell anyone i was going, or where i was going) I went by my local bank and withdrew 1000.00 cash ,i then went and picked up my son to ride along with me. knowing that I could leave the man 1000.00 and a hand shake that day would ensure i would end up with the cars as soon as a deal was finalized. as i drove over to His house, I wondered what I was going to have to pay for the cars.... when I pulled up to His house, I saw him standing in the front yard, he said' before we talk price , I want to give you my conditions i ask of you before i sell them to you, 1st, off your son is the number one reason I'm gonna sell these two cars to you. he said, your son is a good boy, well mannered, and reminds me of what a good kid should be, 2ND i like the way you guys are a father /son team, he went on to say, and when i see you guys working together, its a great thing. Then he went on to say, NOW 1st rule is this , do not sell them, only if your promise to do a father/son project , so that you end up with one car and your son ends up with the other, that's the only way i will do the deal.2ND rule, i will need cash ,no checks and no paper trail.... 3rd do not mention to anyone what amount I'm selling you the cars for . they were not a steal, but as i agreed, i gave him HIS price. I didn't have the money to bring him all at once, but he said, pay me when you can, but you can start getting the cars out of the woods tomorrow. The next day ( after getting little sleep that night) , I was at his house with two chainsaws, and a bunch of chain, woodblocks and portable air compressor. we worked for about three hours cutting trees , and being careful not to drop one on either of the cars.
When we freed the Red car , we got a roll back and loaded it up, I literally had to duct tape the nose so that the rusted metal bottom would not come off on the way home. after it was safe in my backyard, we went back for the white bird. The white car's nose had a tree starting to grow into the nosecone..... (see my pics)...he told me the white car had a few parts in the trunk that he wanted to keep, when we popped the trunk I saw a set of cross ram intakes, a set of barracuda louvers , and a complete six pack set up... he gave me the six pack set up to use on the red car.
when we got the white bird loaded on the rollback, he said, oh yea, come over to this old shack and i think I've got a few of the trim parts in it...... well, the "shack" had been blown over by Hurricane HUGO back in 1988 and it was literally at a forty five degree angle, I found myself crawling on my hands and knees inside to look around, he yelled to me, "on the bottom wooden shelf you should see the trim parts", well, there was no bottom shelf anymore, so as i sifted though the leaves and dirt, I found the two side mirrors the complete nose trim and the "holy grail".... all four rear window trim pieces,... wow they were in great shape, just buried in the dirt.
now with all the parts and the 2ND bird loaded, my son and I shook his hand and told him we would uphold his request and do our best to finish both cars as father/son projects. We still go by and still visit Him about once every two months and always take him a Nice Christmas gift. One important detail is this... He did have a third car in his yard that we were offered, but at that time i couldn't raise anymore money to buy a third car. The car that I left was Black on Black 68 hemi roadrunner with 11,000 original miles.
Now for the details on the SUPERBIRDS
The red superbird RM23UOA167153 did not have a engine in it.
He mentioned he had bought it from the junk yard in 1974 for $700
The car shows about 55,000 miles and is currently being restored with a date coded Hemi.
We found the build sheet under the front seat of the car
The white car RM23UOA173759 the original engine and transmission, the fender tag is there and we found partial build sheets. We were able to start the engine in about a day.
The white car is currently the same way we pulled it out of the woods sitting in our shop, as we want to get the red car back before starting the white car.
He mentioned that he drove the car while going to college and it was last on the road in 1983.
so that's the story. Fast forward to October 28, 2011. The red car is now "finally home" after a 4 year 7 month restoration. Again, I don't want to get ahead of myself so I will try to post more pics of the recovery and beginning showing some of the restoration pics in later posts.
I got nuthin to say but "Wow"

if you read my story..(last two posts) you know how I felt on buying the cars ...but not able to take them home the same day...
the pic im posting now was not a "planned shot" but its one of my favorites.. after taking over 100 pics of the cars in and around the bushes and trees, I found myself looking in the rear side view mirror of my truck and seeing this.........It was a LONG drive home.. and a even LONGER (Sleepless) NIGHT.
im hooked, this should be a book :2thumbs:
the only way this story could be better is if the cars end up in my garage :drool5:
i cant wait to read and see more!
Great story, loved reading it.
You and your son sound like a great team, but to be honest I think you owe your son for this deal.

What a great story, unbelieveable!
You should be very proud of your son. I can only hope he continues to have as much repect and "smarts" as you've taught him as he enters adulthood.
While my son is helping me with my 73 project, and we are very close, I still wish he had the love for the classic car projects as I do. Still, he's a good kid ... kid ... he's 30 now! ::)
It also shows you there are good people in the world willing to do good things for people who show respect.
All I can say is good for you! :2thumbs:
Wow a dream come true. Great reading.
I absolutely agree with everyone's compliments. Congrat's on the find, and even more so on the relationship you and your son share as well as his respect for others.
That's an awesome story.
I'd have made my kid camp out inside one until I could get it home.
Awesome story!
You and your son lived what most of us just dream about. To bad the old guy never had the same relationship with his Dad.....Maybe those Birds would have not been left for dead in the woods.
Amazing stuff... what a nice story! Can't wait to hear more...
... and here I though my friend and I were the lucky ones finding a one-off A12 Super Bee down there in SC :scratchchin:

Speaking of which, hows the car doing with the guy he made a trade with for it? I think the Corvette is still there in the yard.
Mike, how's Harry doing? I haven't talked to him in quite a few years since I misplaced his number. I remember the first time I saw the wing over the bushes too about 1992-93 while I was driving back and forth for a couple years. Drove my Superbee up there a few times to chit chat with him about them and some other things. Everytime I stopped by with the wife he used give me a bunch of them pears off the trees in the back to cook. Was always a nice guy to me. Glad to hear the Red one is finally done.

Good luck with your father/son projects!
Best thread yet. Great to see the guy have a soft side and let the cars go. Love the pics and story. keep them coming. How many finds like this can possibly be out there still? Congrats. Rob.

I agree with Troy. I think it will be more like that. Proud parent.
I can assure you guys, he(the guy i bought them from) is a "proud parent", we talk weekly/monthly, (ACTUALLY HAD lunch with him yesterday) .... he has been "in " on the red bird's progress over its 4.7 year term.... he's made a few trips with me during the resto, and our time spent with him, my son and myself had been all good. he has never had sellers remorse, and is tickled to see the cars staying local. he's mentiond many times, that he would have let them "rot" because he knew he would never have the money to fix them "right."
again , I dont want to get to far ahead of my self and story, but as I stated the red car is now done, and he was happy a as a kid in a candy store to drive his 4 SPEED, HEMI BIRD off the trailer and into its new home.
THOSE PICS WILL COME LATER....
gotta try to keep this thead in some type of order
Great story. I'm glad to see you and your son working on two awesome cars. Also good to see some young kids in the hobby. Good luck with the build on the white car.

As they say up North,,, "Yew betcha.."
someone asked... if the white car is "usable"....and who gets which car....
well, we (my son and I ) will both end up with each a car, (his pick was the red car, due to the "High impact" color plus its a 4 speed car) ... However Because we have almost "over restored it" ...We both are in agreement... the red car is HIS, But its more of a show car now, we may elect to trailer it to meets, shows ect, but the white car ..on the other had is going to be our down and dirty driver..... it wont be fully restored, my son and I will have the metal work done by a pro, however all other aspects will are going to do ourself, ... we just want it to be a decent driver, and we can pull up at a car show or cruise in and say ...."yea its a real bird"... may look a bit ragged around the edges" but she's real.
That way, we will have the best of both worlds... a trailer queen and a everyday driver.
lastly I also feel good about this plan, because it my sons car is the red bird, and we both enjoy the driveability of the white car, when and IF the market value of these cars go back up... my sons car will be a "nicely restored " car with little drive time.
Great story.......I look forward to following this one through to the end. Keep the material flowing for those of us that can't wait for more details!!! :drool5:

i cant wait to see the red car all done, your son has a very good taste to want it for the 4 speed, youve taught him well, unlike all his friends that will probably never know how to shift gears unless its on one of these new "automatic manuals" just dont let him teach his freinds how to shift on it lol
I have just read about how you ended up with the 2 Superbirds. WOW! A great story with an even better ending. I am glad he decided to let you buy the Birds before they were too far gone and rotted down into the ground! Like every one else I will be waiting for more updates and pictures!
Thanks! Mopar John

Im still waiting on a fender tag,a set of Goodyear polyglass tires and a enclosed trailer. Six hours on the interstate with an open trailer scares me when the car is so freshly restored. That wing is Petty blue. Am I missing something?
I bought a 68 charger back in 2006 to do a Daytona clone it had a superbird wing on it..... ill find a pic and post it.( the same clone from the story) in which I took the parts into the guy's yard. ANYWAY ... petty wing you see here came off that car.... figured if Im gonna keep it, ill paint it Petty Blue and get him to sign it.

That charger was the Daytona clone my son and I were working on when we went to take pics of how the nose went on (In my story).
we did finish it, and sold it to generate money to start the Red bird's restoration.
heres a pic of the finished daytona clone.... ( no window plug)...but nice

ok... this picture is one of my favorites, it was taken the next day after getting the cars home. you may see it posted a couple more times on other pages.... Im leading up to a BEFORE and After Pic.
(when we got the Fully restored red car back, we pulled it into the exact same spot, and retook the same pose ...its a cool pic that ill post when i get to the end of this thread. ) it will also show how long it took to get this car back. (my son is almost two feet taller than in the original pic)... as stated, Ill post the before and after pic later..
I know the previous owner was aware of what he had as far as rarity and value, but was he really aware of how far these cars had actually deteriorated? I don't imagine he was out there every week inspecting his cars, so I just wondered if he was suprised to see the level of decay from sitting in the elements for years, such as the rotted trunk floor, nose cone, etc?
I would think as sad as it would be for him to watch his cars slowly rotting away in his backyard , it must be quite satisfying for him to actually get to see them restored, knowing they both went to a good home...

you ARE exactly right... even then, he (original owner) made the comment of how he didnt realize how bad they had gotten in the past few years, (once the tops go... its almost impossible to keep them dry.)...like I said, the original owner is Happy to see them in their new home and coming back to life.

And what is the little bezel next to them ? looks like an air grabber switch bezel ???? did they use that local for other switches also ?

This thread is too cool! Great saga! And I like the way you are rolling it out. A lot of people "can't wait to see it done" I am more interested in seeing pictures of the process than the finished product, so I hope you got lots of them. I like to see the final result too, but the journey is the better part of the story. Congratulations to you and your son, it pays to be polite and respectful of others even though you may sometimes want to "dope slap" them for their actions. Your patience and manners paid off in this case and it sounds like the previous owner turns out to be a nice guy that others considered a jerk for not being open to selling, but I guess I can understand to a point, being badgered continually and people always telling you they aren't worth that much. I would have a hard time giving up my "children" to just anybody with a bunch of cash, I'd want to be sure they were going to a loving caring family and I would be the one making the decision when I was ready, not being forced into it. Again, congrats to you. I'm looking forward to...... "The rest of the story"
Thanks for sharing.

yes, you guys really pay attention to the details. I had forgotten about the seat belt light... turns out, 4 1/2 years later, I had forgotten to mention to the restorer that it had one in there from the factory and so that detail was overlooked. So, all I have now is the rear reverse back up light.
ps. that air graber switch was hooked to nothing. Maybe the original owner, at one time, owned an airgrabber car and robbed the switch on it. Not real sure on that one.

thank you 71rt. you have a very good grasp on the owners feelings and seems like you understand that cash didn't matter to the old gentleman. He was looking for someone that would truly revitalize the car without the idea of trying to make a dollar on them.

Exactly, and also for the fact the car s would live on and be enjoyed by a younger generation. Very cool . And, great pics, Thanks so much for putting up this story gymratt30.
A few years ago I sold a car to the grandson of the original owner who had'nt seen it for 26 years. He just approached me out of the blue.
He was in his thirties and had a lot of childhood memories of being driven around in it, holidays etc- beach, towing the caravan etc and it was also his Mothers wedding day car when her Father took her to the Church. I didnt really want to sell it, but the guy had the most valid reason on the planet for owning it and he met my price.
He told me later when he got it home his Mother just burst into tears and could'nt believe the old car had come back into the Family again after that long , and all restored and with triple carbs.. . Bit of a feel good situation all round.
before I go into the red birds resto... im gonna post som of the white car's interior shots.. ( as I stated, it still looks "as Is" today in our shop) ...figured id keep a timeline on the way the story goes....so heres a few random shots of the white car as pulled into the shop.

I did find a build sheet in both cars.......one in the above pics may be for the red car.....but yes ..both cars had build sheets........one car ...the white one I think...had two....but they were rough.....partial sheets...however the vins were readable on both....'
I hope my son and I score a deal like that some day. You're a lucky man, enjoy.

About 5 or more wingcars the orange car look like to me gymrats one of the found superbirds from SC
As much as I'd like to think it was my red car.....I'm pretty Much sure it isn't. Mostly due to the fact that the original owner stated to me that my car hadn't been on the road since 1974. .he. bought it from a junk yard for 700 dollars.. I have a receipt from the junk yard....also I see one of those red birds has black decals and the other has bucket seats......mine is a bench seat white decal car.......the white car in thepic has black fender scoops ...........mine appear to be factory Alpine white........but I will ask the Guy I bought mine from if it could be possible.
WOW what a story awesome! Nice Job on the 2 birds but why did you go with a HEMI for the Red bird? The VIN Say's is has a 440ci 6pack 4speed  HEMI is cool to :2thumbs: I'am just wondering :scratchchin:
I took the picture of those five winged cars in 1984. This fellow also owned another Bird in disrepair and a Daytona in equal shape. I believe he sold all of them before the popularity of these cars went through the roof. Believe it or not the orange one on the end was his daily driver. Or as we call them down here, 'grocery gitter.'
Even in South Carolina people would ask us, "what kind of car is that?" and "did you make that yourself?"

The red car was born a U code car....four speed.......because it didn't have a motor at all in it...(gone).I decided to go with the Hemi that was a perfect casting date. Or period correct as people refer to these days
.anyway the question. Was weather to make it non matching number 440 car or a non matching Hemi car. I chose the latter.

I see the HEMI is the best motor to go for then, The O might HEMI! Sounds awesome with a 4-speed :drool5:
It's cool the have the HEMI because the White Bird has a 440 so now you got both engines to have fun with :2thumbs: good choice
Hey Mike, I'm FINALLY getting around to posting on this topic... and what a great topic it is!! I just all nine pages. Haha. I'm glad that you and your son were able to buy the cars and save them before they became "too far gone". I remember meeting you and You telling me about the cars at Talladega in '09. When you first started telling me about just recently buying two real 'Birds out of a yard I remember think "this guy can't be serious..." and then you pulled out the photo album and I was speechless! I got the cliff notes version of the story then but to finally get the detailed version of the story made it even better.
Between the nose cone and other random parts that were not reused, looks like you'll have a lot of cool wall art for the shop! Keep up the great work. I just can't wait to see a picture of the old man with the red car.

lately, I've been holding back on posting the next set of pictures for two reasons, 1st it is the "last set" or the coming home pics, and secondly, allot of you will get a DSAC newsletter, that has our story along with some of the "finished" pics. ( Doug has worked hard on the story and I want the subscribers and club members to get the "paper copy" before I start posting the end pics.)
* my last pics (DEC 2010) was when things got a little "lax" with the resto shop. I had fallen in a trap that allot of guys do when having cars restored, .... I had "paid in advance" to the point that all of what I was quoted was paid off , but that's when I started to notice, that less and less time was spent on my car.
I am not one to put anyone down, and will not....so I haven't, and wont name the resto shop that did 95% my car. Now the work was top quality, and I realize it takes time to do a car to this level, however, when you are "quoted 1 - 1 1/2 years , you don't expect it to take 4 1/2 years.
So, after 4 years and a few months I picked up my car and took it to the "second shop" .
I WILL SAY THIS.... the second shop was HODGE restorations, and I must say..."THEY ARE GOOD" Lee Hodge runs a FIRST class shop, Lee took in my car, and within a months time the car was almost completed to show winning standards.
AGAIN I HIGHLY RECCOMEND HODGE RESTORATIONS. not only was he able to finish the car he tuned it, drove it, tested EVERYthing and made sure when we picked it up , it was perfect.
My thanks to Lee and his crew.
So expect in the next few days some pics of the car at home , ( with the original owner sitting in the drivers seat.)
I did shoot some video , however the car was unloaded and night and its kinda dark, may still post a link if i upload it to youtube......look for the "last Pics " soon.

update Dec 2012..... as stated earlier, the Red bird is home and safe in its nest. I have a 40x60 shop. Our shop is not just a storage place for cars, its a "full out " workshop, .... meaning one day it may be used for storing cars, the next day it may be a "lawn mower repair shop, a truck tire swap shop a gathering place for family and friends to enjoy a "pig Picken", ( no telling what will be moved in /out or worked on from a day to day basis, ...... now thinking ahead of our bird coming into a shop used for "more than a storage facility, " I was kinda nervous about it being as nice as a car, and potentially having it damage in one of our "weekend projects" ... I told my son...."yea, I could see us using a half inch drive air ratchet ... and have big socket fly across the room and go through the birds rear glass"So , we decided to build a special room just to house the bird. Kind of a "shield " to protect the car , with our " gung ho"hap-hazard work habits... lol...
here's a couple pics of the room before pulling the car in.
I ve always loved the black and white pic of the rear lot of Creative Industries with the penstar watertower in the back ground, so I actually had a 5ft by 8ft banner made as a back drop for our rear wall. its visible in one of the upcoming pics ill post.
ps. I know Im gonna catch flac about the bowties(chevys) and the ford in the background.....lol gotta love it
room pics
poster I made a banner of

Very nice. Are you considered done with it and is it on the road? When do you plan to start the other one?

I love the Bird!! :2thumbs:
but you made me roll my eyes with the verbage on the signboard.
"original" miles....what other kind are there? you cant get aftermarket or reproduction miles. :smilielol:
How do you now it's not 155k....I bet it was. Either way, it makes no difference. :2thumbs:
Original meaning 55 k not 155k...keep in mind this car was off the road since 1974....55k miles is more likely than 155k miles .....maybe it should read 55k TOTAL MILES.....?.?.?.
Looking fantastic!
ok the red one has a happy ending , how about the white one?
Incredible journey. The Bird's beautiful.
First time I've seen the Bendix booster used without the proper rear bracketry & master with the lines on the motor side. Looks like it works.
Very, very nice. :2thumbs: Happy motoring.

Here's a few of the owner reunited with the his red superbird. Michael and I have become close friends with him over the years, and we have lunch/dinner at least once a month. We ALWAYS make it a point to get him a nice gift at Christmas time and Drop it off by his house. * he recently attended a "pig Pickin" at the house as we celebrated a early family Christmas dinner. He was tickled to see this car finally home. ( he knew, how long we had this car at the first restore's shop...heck, he even made a trip or two with me to check on its progress.). Keep in mind, although he owned this car since 1974 he never got a chance to drive this one /..... remember he bought this one out of a junk yard in1974 to use as a parts car for his white bird. ( he said he paid 700.00 for it from the junk yard.)
Look for some video coming (via a link Ill post) of him driving this Hemi bird on a short trip down our street

after taking a drive in his/our red bird, I took a few pics of the "OTHER" car I had a chance to BUY, But couldnt at the time. ITS a TRUE J CODE 68HEMI ROADRUNNER with 11,000......not a typo ....11000 original miles. Harry used to drag race this car ....so he says ..its a 11000 miles.....but 1/4 mile at a time.

Troy....we enjoy having harry come over all the time nowadays ......last month we took him motorcycle riding with us at Manchester state forest. (Enduro style trails) harry rode the heck out of my son's old RM 125......((if you remember from my story ..harry was a old motocross rider back in the day. ).....'a good time was had by all"

Cool...ill have to ask harry about that....I know he still has the original intake.
but that "RAT ROASTER" looks cool on it.
Another cool story Harry told us was he had a chance ....back in the 70s to buy the Daytona driven by Chuck Neely. (Both Chuck and Harry raced back at Blaney dragstrip back in the day.... Harry said it could been owned for $1500 less engine and tranny. ...there is a thread on here about Chucks car....too cool I thought.
Mike, tell Harry Merry Christmas for me. I stopped by his place this summer to say hello when me and Lynne was looking at the Challenger I bought from the guy across the road from his house. She still mentions about when we got the pears from him and asks if I ever heard how he is doing. Congrats on the getting the work done on the Bird. Sure looks different than when we saw them parked.
Will do David. Good to see you on here. Hows your bird coming?
Thanks Mike Other than a few things here and there my project unfortunately has been on hold for the last couple years. A lot happened with renters and my rental homes getting trashed, taking care of and then losing both my parents and having to settle the estates and the list goes on. Just no time for it. Hope to get back on it soon as I need a good stress relief distraction. When did Harry move the RR from under the shed? I'm sure he was happy to see his car.

OK, I'm going to attempt to begin the Current story on the white Bird, AS it is No suprise to a few of you on here, the White Bird is going to be restored in season lll of Graveyard carz. After My story was Published By Doug in the DSAC newsletter , it wasn't long before I spoke to Mark Worman, about the story, and the Second car ( the white bird) ....As it stands, It will be on there show in season 3 ..... My son was ecstatic to have the Opportunity to Be on the show and also it FINALLY gave Him a ligament reason to step foot on a airplane..( He's never flown...until now). we Struck a deal with Mark , and shipped out the bird last Summer, we flew out last September to do the "story on the cars" and taping of our segment on graveyard carz. It was a very laid back shoot, and the cast and crew are top notch. My son was tickled to be on their show and awaits the up coming season ( plus one for season 3) . It will be a very worthwhile wait, to say the least.
Our initial plans was for the Car to be done "body in White" However after thinking about the Distance of having the motor/Tranny shipped back to us for my son and I to have rebuilt and intall here ourselves, We had to re- think our plan.....*( mark wanted to do the story as a complete "untouched" project so that they could dissemble the car on the show and document all. ....with all that said, we decided to talk to Harry (original owner), He agreed with our second Idea,.... and that is to drive it home ....take a week ... and make a Father/Son Crosscountry trip in our restored bird. ..so that's the plan.
If it works out Harry will fly out with us to Pickup the car ( he will also be on the show).....lets hope it all works out ....
all for now, Mike and Michael Hill

I saw the white and primer bird at welbys, back in may.was pretty sure that it was your car,but maybe not long way from home. i was there to measure and fondle,,ooh check out the daytona nose and did trace the shape and size of the daytona too fender mounting face. did 2 tracings on large cardboard,so i could reinforse and cut out and size up to my 75 dar-tona topless project. hope to order my nose in a few weeks,to modify for my toy..
:scratchchin: :scratchchin: HEY JUST HAD A IDEA??? maybe i should open my house as bed and breakfast and airport transport to members coming out to welbys??? IAM only 20ish blocks from his shop??? Hey Mike !!! Man, it was nice seeing you and Mike Jr. on the show.... I grabbed Jacob and asked him, "Hey, don't you remember Mike? He was at Talladega with us chatting in the staging area."............ He said, "Dad, nope"...... hahahaha.. I have to remember, Jacob was only 4 years old at the time..
I guess I was more pumped up seeing you on TV... Not as pumped up as Mark's going to be on your return....... :icon_smile_big:

I loved the episode and can't wait to see the episode when the car is finished and you, your son and the original owner pick up the finished car. Truly an inspirational story. :2thumbs: :2thumbs:
I thought it was a pretty good episode also. I thought the story was told really well and enjoyed seeing the other pictures of them buried in those weeds. I thought it was cool the way they did the fade from when you were standing next to the car when you first bought it and then the current picture showing how much your son has grown. They do grow up fast! Nice story.

First off, thanks Stewart we had a lot of fun. And Troy, I make that same mistake all the time with my son, asking him if he remembers something from 20 years ago and realizing he is ony 17. lol Believe it or not, we did it in one take. Well... kind of. I was half way through telling my story the first time when the camera man stopped me and informed us that we had lost audio and I needed to start over. so, the footage you see is the second take and by that time, I did feel a bit more nervous and seemed as though I was picking and choosing my words instead of telling the story as I normally talk. We were being filmed for about 40 min and I see it was trimmed back to about 6 or so. All in all it was a great experience.
great photos :2thumbs:

nice pics mike. You've got to be excited to see it started. Man, some of you guys notice EVERYTHING! The screw holding the valve cover !! Not making fun, just amazed that people notice stuff like that.

mike and his son and the car
What an AWESOME AWESOME story! :2thumbs:
:2thumbs:
You know Mike, I wished you never updated today. At 8:00 AM I was getting ready to head outside to work on my 1968 Road Runner that I have owned for 40 years and Mon and Dad bought new but I came across your post and could not stop reading it! :popcrn:
If you and your son had happen to came by and handle me like you did the gentleman with the Wing cars you would have more than likely have gotten her.
Little back ground. It was around 8 years ago I finally got burned out on cars. That in it self in long story Could not get the Road Runner started so she sat out side and I got into a new hobby that covers my 2 car garage.
I had my fair share of idiots come by and asked me about the old Plymouth sitting out side. More than a few thought I was going to be stupid and take $500.00 for her.
Guess it was about 3 months ago I found another note on her asking if she was for sale? For the heck of it, I gave the guy a call and he came by with cash in hand. I wanted to talk about my baby, he wanted to make a deal! He throw down a fair amount offer in cash then raised it again a little. Kept telling him there was not a for sale sign on the car but at this point I was wondering if I had one last car left in my old bones but all so knew I had not thought about touching her for years! So I was thinking about it? :shruggy:
Here is where he lost the deal!
1 Kept offering me money
2 I said If I sell her, I want to know she will be done in her factory color and nothing bigger than a 15" wheel.
3 Said he was going to use the same kind of wheels I have on her now,(which I like) But was going to use A Ford Color With Metal Flake and Flames!
His parting words where When I buy it from you I will keep it till I am in the grave!
I pointed out that was my plan as well! :nana:

Basically a complete rebody :P
Agreed,....I'm sorry but when a vehicle gets boned that much for repair, it's still a rebody even if original/NOS parts were used in the reconstruction, it's just easier and more cost/time effective to roll a clean donor next to it, and transfer anything salvageable onto it, to even consider that car somewhat "original" anymore is foolhardy, more than 75% of the original main body is gone, what a waste of time/labour :Twocents:
I, personally, can still appreciate the fact that they are saving the car. Yes, it may be 75% new repro metal but the soul of the car and the nostalgia is what matters to me. These cars aren't going to be produced ever again and with time taking its toll on the ones that are left, more and more of them are going to be like this whether we like it or not. Should the fact that its been repaired to this extent be hidden, definitely not. However, with posting this on the internet and having the work done at a shop with a national TV series, I don't think transparency is going to be an issue.
i looked at this car in person before the restoration and the metal was rough, but in the long run it will be another wing car saved. rebodied? I don't think so, more like resurrected.. :2thumbs: :2thumbs:
Mighty fine craftsman there :2thumbs:
Not gonna get into the whole re-body or still considered the same car argument...because to ME...the car IS the same car, it retains its original frame, basic structure, engine, tranny, rearend, etc., It dosent bother me one bit if people consider it a rebody, re pop, or real bird...ITS MY CAR... it wont be for sale, ( at least in my lifetime, and its built for driving,...it only matters to the "pureist" that it has had most of the metal replaced, )in MY book, its was a SUPERBIRD, AND WILL ALWAYS BE A SUPERBIRD.
got to ask..... if your dad or a family member was in a bad accident and had to have artificial legs and arms put on......would they STILL be your dad?..... just food for thought... (cause these cars are my "kids" now)
good answer. and as you say, the car will never leave your grasp.
i remember a long conversation about a burnt orange 69 charger that also went down that road. but in the end what matters is who owns it and what they plan to do with it.
enjoy the cars with your son. thats the perfect ending. many here would love that relationship with our own dads, or sons. :2thumbs:

To me, this is simply the best car story I have had the plessure to experience.
I love the local legend story, the outcome and ultimately the father and Son connection............outstanding! :2thumbs:

Or or or a power buoy. (http://scitechdaily.com/floating-power-buoy-creates-electricity-from-ocean-waves/)
From what I understand they want to be as "green" about this as possible.
Some of these new fancy devices are on the OR/WA coast line. The crane rental place I worked at is setting them. Thousands of feet of boom to reach out there. Couple million lbs. of counterweight, quite the site. ;)

The work looks good
On another note, that's the first Superbird nose I've seen that's rusted to pieces. Most I've seen on here have been mildly customized though from run ins with other vehicles though.

looking great mike :drool5: :2thumbs:
Thanks Stuart ..hope things are well with you.
Looks great Mike !!! Is yours an early 'Bird? Not sure if it has been mentioned or discussed in this thread, but the fan should be a direct drive fan, not a clutch....... It was discovered, via the problems of the Daytonas in the previous year to 6 months prior to Superbird release, the clutch fan wasn't cutting it I guess, hence Mopar Engineers redirection to the direct drive 223 fan for Superbirds..

Mike,
might be hard to find the exact "223" fan, but I believe the "224" are out there... Bascially the same thing except the 224 doesn't have the blade sandwiched between two flanges and riveted, just one. You should be able to find direct drive fans for 26" rads and spacer..
The car is looking great Mike!!

I agree with hemigeno's and Troy comments... (AND I ordinarily would not answer that type of question),
Well, I don't mind giving a general ballpark figure of what I've had to put into these cars....I Must admit to do both cars , the total has exceeded, the 100K mark. (excluding the cost of the cars initially)
Now as for asking How Much a Supermodel weighs....... My wife was Just Picked up by a fitness clothing Company for Modeling their New Line for 2015/16 year...... I CONSIDER HER A SUPERMODEL, and to answer the Supermodel weight question.... She's 108lbs in Competition , 122lbs offseason. lol

Belive me I Didn't HAVE that kind of money laying around. You must understand ..I'm a pretty simple 8-5 hard working man.
75-80% of the restoration cost came from my son and I buying fixing and selling old cars....all done as a side hobby on the weekends and late nights out in my shop...just to pay these rest charges I bet we have bought at least 10-15; muscle cars ,got them back to driver quality and sold them for a small profit...THAT small profit was then handed to the restoration shop to keep working on our cars....then look for the next muscle car..ive sold roadrunners , cudas, chevelles and many more.....it's been a long road on getting these 2 cars done , but we see light at the end of the tunnel. We're ready to enjoy the fruits of our labor....lol
Just didn't want the board members think it was as ea.!sy as stroking a check for 100 plus for restoration charges. Cause it wasn't that easy....lol

It probably was THE SAME CAR...if so I sat on that card wing at 6 years old and It was the car that made a lifelong desire to own one.....Really enjoyed reading it...Thanks much for posting it! Wow!

TODAY'S UPDATE: top is on , headliner is in, wheels and tires are on.
I choose to put a set of radial tires on it to make the 2800 mile trip home, Once it gets here I have a new set of Polyglass repos to go on it.
I remember driving on Bias Ply ... not a bundle of joy for 2800 miles,,
headliner is in...
Mike, what plug are you using? I commented on the pics that GYC posted on facebook, but I don't remember my plugs being anywhere near that "flat". From where it's at they'd have to put a ton of filler back up there to round out the transition...my cars were both original and had nearly a 1/2 of filler in places. Yours is sitting so flat I'd test fit the rear glass.
Here is our Petty car after re-doing the vinyl top.

Dash installed.
Odometer. ( Rolled to 0 But I'm good with that.)
Here in S.C. no matter how many miles the title shows , SC law say any vehicle over 40 yr old MUST SHOW mileage exempt.

We will be flying out the 19th of this month,(Sat). Sunday/Monday GYC will be shooting footage of our visit, and Then on Monday afternoon , the 21st we will be heading out to begin our trip home.
I plan on driving down the California coast, (A1 ) to the Santa Monica Pier, (starting point for Route 66) and then travel as much as is left of route 66 .
I have rented a River Pilot GPS that will actually give you a turn by turn route of all the "hot spots" on old 66. We plan on traveling 350- 500 miles a day Pending on our stops, but we have to be back around the 1st of August for Michael to start College.

I have rented a River Pilot GPS that will actually give you a turn by turn route of all the "hot spots" on old 66. We plan on traveling 350- 500 miles a day Pending on our stops, but we have to be back around the 1st of August for Michael to start College.
Awesome!
:2thumbs:
That will be a trip both of you will keep with you for the rest of your lives!
Take lots of pictures!

It's great to hear it's close to Go-Time for you. When you're heading through Missouri, I'm about 6 miles north of old 66 once you get to St. Clair (+/- 50 miles SW of St. Louis). You're welcome to stop by the shop here for a break if it's convenient, as I'd love to see the car and visit.
yep, im another one right by rt 66. you should be able to get flyers of the stuff to do along the way. there are a few old gas stations along the route here in illinois for good photo opertunities. i can give you the locations if you cant locate them. then the hotdog stand in springfield il. drive-in theater, etc... hope it is a great trip.

I love the local legend story, the outcome and ultimately the father and Son connection............outstanding! :2thumbs:
Totally agree- This is the first time I have ran into this story. Absolutely amazing....give your son a fist bump from Idaho for me.

We are about 25 miles north of the old 66 in SW Missouri. I would love to watch it roll through town also. I may come by with my 'bird. I don't want to tie up your time visiting and such but if you need help along the way just call me. I will PM you my number. Good luck on the trip.

Mark called me on Sunday night to "let me hear the Bird start up and purr like a Kitten" after being "asleep " for the past 31 years. (taken off the road in 1983).

we Pick the white Bird on Sunday ( mark will have his television crew there either Sunday or Monday morning as we begin our trip across the USA via route 66.
Please look for our new thread called "locations on route 66" , if you are live somewhere near route 66, I'm asking for board members to text me their name/ and state they live in , Just incase we breakdown.
its nice to know that some guys have already given me their phone numbers and contact info incase of emergency.
We're pretty confident that the car will make the trip, but its always nice to know, help is close by.

Hi Mike, well I don't have a picture but I know there's one on facebook, but I don't know which trunk is worse. Mine opens up nice but is like crawling in a coffin, yours is doesn't open much at all! I made sure I left a piece of metal between the quarter and the trunk extension so it will be an annoying rattle to figure out.

Thanks for your Help Tom, I was surprised to see you out there..
as far as the Rattle goes... that pretty sneaky of ya....
I recall years ago, we had a sales rep ,(he was the king of practical jokers) that knew nothing about cars.... One day when he was calling on our company, I happen to have my floor jack on my truck at work, so I jacked up his car and put a 12 inch zip tie around the drive shaft of his car..... the Next week, (seeing him come back into our shop) WE HAD THE LAST LAUGH... he actually took it to the dealer...lol
Here's a picture of our bird's license plate.
(Know it's the Daytona that ran the 200.447 with B.BAKER., but figured the wing car guys would still get it)

if it's possible to get them back there safely, the money shot is certainly both cars sitting where you first found them.
