Doug I think you guys should bring the green Daytona instead. I mean you have 2 years to get it up and going.

A Talladega pace lap would probably require an "Offical Pace Car"??!!!!

Congrats!!!  You are the winner!!  Someone finally noticed!!
I've had it to a few shows this year and absolutely no one noticed.

The photo below is an original photo from the track when it was  a pace car in 1971. Once "Offical", always "Offical"!!!

Sunset Speedway still exist up there?

RealWing

Yes - Sunset Speedway is still in operation - near Barrie, Ontario, Canada. I hope to get it back on the track next year for another lap and photo.

Awesome ! I love this car, saw it at Carlisle. And I didn't notice the spelling either at first

Make sure you get it back up to the track you get an "offical" picture in front of the tower just like in the original pic  :2thumbs:

Thanks
Now that I've finally finished the restoration - I can't believe it took me 12 years and 3 months!!!
Now that it is on the road - I'm finding out more of its history. With the help of a friend, I was able to track down the mechanic who used to work on the car. Also found a local drag racer who was "loaned" the car to drive for a couple of weeks by the General Manager at Jackson's Motors. As you can imagine - he didnt baby it!! In fact he and a buddy beat the $%^& out of it. Said it would do 140 MPH with no problem. After too many speeding tickets, he took it back to the dealer. Nobody wanted the car after that - so probably that is why it ended up being a pace car in 1971.

My inner OCD would explode.  Do I spell it properly because it would make my skin crawl to see it wrong, or would I live with modifying the original?  Boom.

I had the original photo for a few years before I even noticed the mistake!!! When I started to blow up sections of the photo to scale the lettering size and have the decals made - that is when I saw the mistake. It was actually an easy decision - it had to be exactly like the original!!!

There also a large decal on the hood - but so far I havent found anyone with a photo showing it.

No offical hood decal.. well that's just not right !  :icon_smile_big:
You going from historical account there was one on the hood?

If you zoom in close, you can just make out something on the hood - it even seems to show at the upper edge of the nose as well. I think it is a Sunset Speedway logo but can't be sure. The mechanic said he thinks there was also lettering down each side of the hood: "Stock Car Racing Every Wed Night"

A lot of reflection going on there.
No other pics to refer to?
I'm sure they'll show up somewhere.

Haven't found any more photos. The mechanic who used to work on the car confirmed there was a logo and knows the company that did the original lettering. They are still in business and he is going to talk to them. Failing that, hopefully when I get it back on the track next year, someone will come forward with some photos.
Plus I have no idea how the lettering placement looks like on the other side of the car. (eg quarter panel)

Best of luck at the track.
I'm sure someone will recognize it from back then, at the very least, and confirm what was on the car.
If you're lucky someone will still have old pics.  :2thumbs:

No - both sides are lettered - but we just guessed about the placement of the lettering placement on the RR quarter panel. ie was it a mirror image on the other side or just flipped or? Need more photos!!

Have you tried an ad in that Old Autos newspaper?  They seem to have a lot of readers who submit vintage racing photos from Ontario.

In fact, now that I think of it, there is the Collector car auction in Toronto in a couple of weeks and Old Autos always have a booth there.  I know a couple of old time dirt trackers from that area who will be there as well so I'll make a point of asking them when I see them.

Asked around and they didn't rmember the car but one suggested contacting Nate Salter who writes for Old Autos as he owned Sunset back around that time.
