Title: Aero Cars at the Brickyard 400, July 29-31 2011 - Registration Form Posted
Post by: Aero426 on June 06, 2011, 02:26:36 PM
This has come together VERY quickly.    I was contacted by a representative of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway a couple weeks ago.   They are interested in doing a display of Wings and Aero Fords for the Brickyard 400.   I have quietly been asking a few people, and there is enough interest to make this go.     The dates are Friday July 29th, Saturday the 30th, and Sunday the 31st.     This is a fantastic opportunity to be at a premier event on the NASCAR tour, and to be able to drive your car on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Friday - Display at the Speedway.   All cars will be inside the track.   If we have enough cars on hand (10+), we will be able to get on the track for parade laps.

Saturday is qualifying day and there is a two hour break between qualifying and final practice where we will be able to get on the track for parade laps.

Sunday is race day, and schedule permitting with NASCAR, there will be another parade lap before the race.

The track will be providing weekend passes to our attendees bringing a participating car.   You will need to let me know you are coming, and who will be attending.

Saturday and Sunday are the big days, so if you cannot make Friday, you will still have plenty to see and do at the race track.

I have a hotel lined up at a reasonable price, $99 per night, and will announce that shortly.

So who is in?   This is a fantastic opportunity to be at a premier event on the NASCAR tour, and to be able to drive your car on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Doug,
quick question, would the weekend pass be for each car, or each driver/passenger?

Scott, I need to get them a list of who is attending with each car for passes.    So they will cover driver and passenger.

What is included is a weekend admission to the grounds and grandstand tickets to the race on Sunday.   I will need to get a list of people attending with your show car.   So driver and passenger will be covered.  I will confirm if you will need to order any tickets over and above that.    Pit passes are not included.

The Speedway is very history conscious.    I was there the day before the 500 for the memorabilia show.   Being the 100th Anniversary, the atmosphere that weekend was electric.   Glad to hear you will make it.

25 cars are committed so far.

You will most likely find that the driven to the event car will be more of the exception than the rule, a lot of them will be coming on trailers....because of the distance if nothing else.

Yea, trailering makes the most sense given the distances and time gone.  Also, I'm assuming our cars will be held hostage over the weekend and another vehicle would be handy to have if needed.

No, you have plenty of time to get it figured out.

You will most likely find that the driven to the event car will be more of the exception than the rule, a lot of them will be coming on trailers....because of the distance if nothing else.
I must be the exception to a bunch of rules then!
only trailered if broke or moving across the country, wait a minute it's broke now...

Count us in.  After all, we don't have to spend our hotel/fuel money this year to get to the national meet!

With the savings, you can bring both cars then.  :smilielol:

Confirmed, and yeah we'll probably bring two.  I'd like to take the Petty car, and mom wants Marty...

::) If I do I'll never show my face again!

Technically I had all the signs of a TIA (mini-stroke),  Even a top heart surgeon from Chicago that Dave Kanofsky knew was convinced after talking to me.  But, they ran all sorts of tests when I got home and couldn't find any signs of damage.  They attributed it to extreme exhaustion and stress from thrashing on the car to get it ready for the meet.  I learned my lesson about pushing myself like that.

Wow 50 cars. Thats impressive. What day is everyone thinking of coming into town? And would anyone be interested in doing anything else on say Saturday night after leaving the track. There is a place on the south side of indy that has a cruise-in every saturday during the summer with around 150-300 cars coming on a typical saturday night. I know the people who put it on each weekend, and could possible see if they  would set asside a spot for us to park if you guys are interested.

And if anyone is coming into town on Thursday afternoon and wanted to come on out to the house for a cook out I'd be more than happy to grill for everyone.

Doug I asked off for work for Friday to be able to do that stuff, and will be there on Saturday as well, but depending on how my sons baseball team is doing in a tournament that weekend I might not make Sunday's events. But if to do it I have to pay for a pass for all 3 days I'm fine with that. I'd rather have it all lined up to do all 3 days and then miss Sunday rather than not do any of it.

Danny if you want to plan for something Saturday night, I'd say go for it.

If I did not mention it earlier, the other things happening in town are
Thursday night:  ARCA and Silver Crown at IRP
Friday night:  NASCAR trucks at IRP
Saturday night:  NASCAR Nationwide at IRP

The Thursday night deal might come together for displaying some cars at IRP, which is about 15 minutes from the hotel.  But if you want to have some people over that is fine too.   We appreciate your offer of help.

Your Thursday idea is probably the most manageable for having some people over.   The car count is up to 60.   You're talking 200 people by Saturday night.   I think your idea of hitting a cruise night on Saturday is a good idea.

if space for dropping trailers, etc becomes an issue, im 40 miles east of indy, right off of interstate 70. there is room to leave several here for the weekend if anyone headed in from the east would want to drive the last part of the journey.

The Sam's lot is large.  If we keep the rigs tight we should be ok.  I will research a fall back plan in case the lot fills. Looking at the aerial view, the immediate area appears to have limited options.  The people at IMS may be able to help if we get into a jam.

Security is no different from any other event in that you will need to be prepared on your end.  Cars off trailers can certainly be boxed in.  Tow rigs can be temporarily disabled if need be.    I asked the lady at the race track about the area, and she said it was OK.   Obviously we can ask the local PD to keep an eye on things.

I am only speculating at this point.   When they hosted the vintage Indy cars this year before the 500, it was near the museum.   They had 200+ cars on display opening weekend in May.   The Plaza by the Gasoline Alley would be cool, but I think we have outgrown that.   Crowd control there could be a problem as that is THE happening spot.  It will have to be somewhere to get on and off the track easy enough.

Sounds good.. Of course you know I was only kidding about the lobster............. Maybe shrimp...  :nana:
Like you, I had thought about the crowds and where our cars were going to be. It would be nice to be able to browse around without fear of spectators messing with the cars. Whereever we go, it's pretty much close to anything. Maybe we could jump in the lake to cool off. Hopefully the high pressure system that's over Southeast Texas will follow me there, hence no rain....

Okay I'll give my input on the hotel/Sams club parking lot your talking about Doug. That area is not the worst area of town by any means, but just so you know there is also a bar right next to the Hotel that gets quite the biker turn out on some weekends. As far as there being enough parking for all of the trailers, there should be plenty of spots. I'd guess that lot could hold about 500/600 cars easily and that Sams Club is never very packed.

Depending on how far some people wanna drive their cars, and if they would rather just leave a trailer somewhere else. I've got enough yard for about 15-20 trailers easily if people wanted to drop them here. But my house is about 35-40 min from the hotel your all staying at.

Thursday works for us. If everyone is coming into town for the most part on Thursday your all more than welcome to swing down this way and enjoy a cook out, chit chat, relax and just hang out.

My plan is to leave early Wednesday and make it a two day trip.  My wife and I went to her family reunion in Green Bay last summer and we made it to St. Louis just before dark and stopped for the night.  Driving straight through is a really tough ride, but if that's what you have to do....  :shruggy:

We are south of Indy. I will make it easy and just post our address. 1320 Inverness Farms Road, Martinsville Indiana 46151. There is a total of 21 houses on our street and we are the second house once you get up the hill in the neighborhood. If I had to guess there is about 3.5 acres of grass area that is flat enough to park trucks or trailers on.

Man.... I look at intellicast.com every day.... Will Indiana ever STOP getting rain.. I mean, it's one train of thunderstorms after another.. Danny, has it been that bad up there? It's coming down there now........  (noonish time Monday).

I'll obviously be monitoring the conditions as the days of the event approach.......

Yeah its been a very rainy spring so far. On the bright side Indiana's weather is known for changing on a dime though. Could be thunderstorms one day then 90 and humid the next. Pretty much been rain just about every 2-3 days since march. Which makes keeping up on the lawn cutting a major chore. But I haven't fallen behind just yet for the summer.

Guys,  new hotel information if you still need a room.

Baymont Inn
6010 Gateway Dr
Plainfield, IN  46168
317-837-9000
$79 night

This hotel is 10 miles from the main hotel (Wingate).    It's owned by the same people.

*** If you booked a room at the Comfort Inn & Suites next door to the Wingate,  several people have called and had difficulty getting the agreed rate and have been asked for a four day minimum by the owner.   A few people did get in there at the agreed terms.  In light of the potential problem, we went back to the Wingate people and they arranged the block at the Baymont.    I have removed the Comfort Inn information from my earlier post a week ago.

A followup to my comments at the raffle...

Remember, the reason that we are invited to the Indy Car race.... it is to provide "value" to the paying ticket holders.    Or, as someone Friday night said to me, "It's like we are working for the race track" - and that is precisely the case.   In some small way, Indy is hoping that someone who attends the race will look at the actual race, as well as everything else (including the Wing Cars) and go "Wow!  I want to come back to Indy again, next year!"  Our job, is to help Indy sell tickets.

So in that regard, IF it is successful, and the feedback is positive - we might get invited back EVERY year!  As a result, here are a few tips....

1) IF you encounter an Indy Official - let them know how excited you are to "help give the fans a good show".  Don't be excited to be there (even though you are) but be excited to "do anything we can to help the race fans have a great time"

2) When you interact with race attendees, always compliment the folks at "Indy".   Say to the fans, "This is a great event, isn't it?"  "We're happy to be here to help the folks at Indy give you a race experience that's the best in the world!"   You get the idea.   "Sell" the race, as you talk about your car.

3)Be prepared for anything.

The actual NASCAR officials (not Indy) are in charge of managing the race event.  The things they DON"T want to worry about is one of the Wing Cars dropping oil or debris on the track that they would then have to spend extra time cleaning up - so if someone has a puddle under your car - that could lead to NASCAR saying "no parade lap" for anyone.  You get the point.  Clean, dependable cars are what they want to see.

Also, the other concern will be "how many cars do you have??  Wow, that's a lot!"  As a result, you want to let the officials know you have a plan to get 75 cars on and off the track quickly.  The way to do this is to have the cars pre-numbered 1-2-3.  If your car is a "1", you go to th bottom row.  A "2", will be in the middle, and most likely directly behind the pace car.  A "3" goes to the top.  That way you have three abreast and it is done quickly.  You also want to exit the track in the same order.

Ask the pace car driver to set a steady consistent speed, say 70 mph, ("because that's good for cooling") and everyone needs to maintain consistent spacing of about 1-2 car lengths between.  You don't want any rear enders, so its not the time for irregular speeds!

Finally, the weather is your enemy.  IF they've had rain in the morning, their focus will be on getting the track dry.  They may cancel the parade lap so the jet driers can work the track.  It might be suggested that 75 Wing Cars running laps around the track might be even more effective in helping dry the track!   (Just thinking ahead)

Wish I could be with you all - but I'm countng on you all to make such a great impression that it will become an annual event! (And I'll be there in 2013)

Another hotel option has surfaced:

Wyndham Airport Indianapolis
2544 Executive Dr
Indianapolis, IN
317-248-2481

They just dropped their rates to $109 per night.   We have no block, just call to make a reservation.   This is the same side of town as the "Wingate by Wyndham" which is fully booked.    Distance between hotels is only a few miles.

I mention the above hotel as the word on the street is that the Baymont Inn at $79 is very basic and is older.    Probably OK for a couple guys going to the races.  If you're bringing a family, you may want the nicer accomodations of the Wyndham Airport.

I spoke to the people at IMS last Thursday.   They will be sending a registration form to me.   As soon as I receive it, I will forward it by email or post a link to it here.   Those of you attending will need to turn this form around quickly back to IMS.   This is the mechanism that will get you the passes.   It's not yet clear whether they will be distributed in advance, or will be picked up in person.    I will fill you in as soon as this question is answered.

Doug have they said what he prices are going to be? I don't think I can stick around for the race on Sunday, but I'll be there before the race if that is alright. Kind of like how we did Talladega. But if I have to pay for a ticket to the race to get in on Sunday I'll do that too.

Yes, Jim, the effort put us right in the middle and at the edge of the tornado.  If we had stayed at the drive-in restaurant or made it to the hotel we would have been safe but instead went right into it.  If we were 1/2 block over we would have been covered in trees and power poles, instead or a shattered windshield, and vehicles beaten with debris with chips down to bear metal, but the important thing is that no one was injured badly.

At least we were in our truck unlike Chuck, Troy and Kellys.

I think the only other vehicle was Mike's van.

Don't want to experience that again.

We keep getting to many weather threats when we are in Keokuk too.

More on the schedule:

They are going to park us in a high visibility area on Hulman Blvd which is the main road inside the track.    There is a wide area which is part of the road course and that is where we will be.   Cars will be behind Jersey barriers, so there will be no issues there.   The fencing directly behind the Vettes shown here is from the road course.

Friday will be a show day.   I am told there will not be a track lap on Friday.   We will enter the track at 6:30 AM.    They want to get us parked safely before the major traffic comes in.   If you are going to be arriving later in the day,  we will need to know this so we can block off parking spots with would otherwise be absorbed by general race needs.   Please note this on the registration form, and let me know at superbirdclub@yahoo.com.   I will also need to work out a way to get you your tickets if you are coming in later on Friday.  Otherwise you can pick them up at the Wingate Friday night.

Saturday will another 6:30 arrival.    Same deal, if you are arriving after the group,  we need to know.     Parade lap is immediately after qualifying which should wrap up apx 4:30 PM

Sunday is projected at a 5:00 AM (gulp) arrival.    Parade lap is still TBA per NASCAR.   Race is at 1:00 PM

Escorts to the track are still planned for Saturday and Sunday.

Should you care to do so, there will be rig parking available at the track, outside the oval.   Your truck or trailer can go there any of the days.    It is secured.

Once the aero cars are parked, they will be parked for the day, just like at Talladega.   If you need to go somewhere else during the day , you can park your tow vehicle on the south lot outside the oval.

More info to follow as I receive it.    We are very close to 100 cars.

Oh Roy you are so funny!!!!

The ironic thing was the day before when we toured the Chrysler engine plant as they reviewed the safety stuff with us before the tour they instructed what to do in case of a T and we sat there thinking this is Sept., you don't have them then.

Then the next day there it happened.

And today I wish we could send you some rain from last night 4" the highways were flooding and our country
road was a constant sheet of water to push through....not water over the road.....just thick water on the road from the volume of rain

Yea, I just got the same reply from her, she does sound nice.  Considering the amount of people coming, has the subject of renting one of the suites they have there been brought up?  I know they are spendy, but if enough people were interested it might be affordable.  Just a thought.... If something was available close to the our cars, air conditioned luxury is something that certainly would be appreciated by the wives.   Bob

Since we are on pavement, I will ask if there is some kind of area that they can accomodate us to get out of the sun.

Doug, I sent in an email with 3 pictures attached 2 days ago but have not heard anything back from the track. Not sure if they are communicating with you once they receive registrations from people, but I did send one in through email. If I need to I could just drop one by the track as it is on my way to work each day.

Another question for Doug...  I assume our race day tickets are general admission seating.  If we wanted to upgrade can we do it at the track or should it be done before?  Thanks, Bob

Yes, Katie has been emailing people back.   Maybe just shoot her a separate email without attachments asking if she got yours.

Just a reminder from the Speedway, they have received credential requests for as many as 8 and 12 tickets.    There are two other groups coming (vintage racers and Goodguys cars) so the problem is not necessarily us.    But lets make sure we are asking for tickets that we need up to a max of four per car.

RV parking is all outside the facility on the south end.    Trailers can stay with the RV on that end.   I cannot guarantee how fast you will get out on Sunday.   If this will not work, I would suggest you camp at the Sam's Club lot and drive the cars back and forth to the hotel.

The track has also received a request for a golf cart, and I am sure that a request for garage passes is not far behind.   Those are notgonnahappen.com       This is a mutually beneficial event between IMS and us, and I just want to be sure we are moving in the right direction.   :yesnod:

what a privilege, we are having by the track inviting us to be there.

we don't want to mess this up by asking for to much etc. and I think everyone here realizes that.....must be those other brands......lol

Because hopefully, they will want us to return someday again.

a lot of questions of what is allowed can be answered by going to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway website that will tell what is allowed on the grounds

y'all also might want to double check with friends that if they are planning to come with cars and did not Contact Doug to let him know or getting the form registered at Indy they need it done NOW!!!!

Gee, thanks Troy - but I can handle it.

I wish I could commit to doing this event, and in future years I hope to make way more of these types of things.  This particular year, it is just too close to Carlisle (and all the time I had to spend lately getting the car wrapped up) to justify taking several more days off from work.  I'm just as bummed about missing Doug's event in Cleveland - as well as the event Stu & Larry put on last year in Branson... all were events that I would have loved to have attended even without my car.

One of these years!

Oh, and Allen, c'mon down anytime (might want to wait a week or so though for me to get everything unloaded &  organized).  Don't forget about the wall art I have in the garage for you.  Leave it there much longer and I'll have it permanently mounted on the Hemi House's wall   :D

For board members wanting to attend the show at the Brickyard, but are not bringing a car,  IMS has general admission tickets for $10 on Friday and $15 on Saturday.    This gets you into the infield car show, and also any available grandstand seat to watch practice and qualifying.   I believe you will be able to purchase a walk up ticket, or buy them in advance online.

Would some one be so kind as to take photos?   I can't attend and would love to see some great photos of original or original restored engine compartments, trunks, things that could help me put my car back together correctly.    Not to mention, just pics of that many wing cars will be nuts!   Maybe someone can creatively do a photo collage.

Also - anyone plan on videoing the parade laps - that would be awesome to see on eBay.

Hey 41Husk, chill and relax, it should be fine that you have not received an email confirmation.

I talked to Doug.....he is away from the computer and he said that the email reponses have been to those that sent their registration in by email, that those sent by snail mail have not been getting emails.  He also figures that they have had a barrage of mail hit them at one time.
Doug snail mailed his and did not get an email.

I have also talked to someone that emailed theirs in and it was 2 days before they had a response

So since they probably have so much mail, it might be awhile before she can respond to your inquiry emails

So Doug what is the absolute deadline for telling them if your coming or not? I talked to a few more local guys (from here in Indiana) yesterday and at least 1 of them should be coming with his Superbird. Not sure on the others, but I wasn't sure if it was too late to send in the registration now as I thought the 15th was the cut off.

I assume everyone here has now registered.    The deadline to have your forms in to IMS is Wednesday.    Katie from IMS will be emailing information to participants by then, if not sooner.

Hello from Rapid City S.D..  Your on, I'll be in touch later to firm up a meeting time and place.  We're looking at staying at the Best Western in Peoria.  Do you know if they have some trailer parking spaces there?  That has become an issue in places.  I'm even renting a car here to take in the sights so as not to lose the space I have here now.  It's all good though.  Later,  Bob

Thanks!  We are enjoying the trip.  My biggest concern was weather with the open trailer (mainly hail).  We did hit a big thunderstorm yesterday around Deadwood.  I thought that the car would have gotten trashed with the typical road grime from wet roads, but it came down sooo hard and stopped so abruptly that the car looks like it never it never happened.  Bob

Bob,
I think the Best Western is actually in Morton IL, (just across the river from Peoria) they have have plenty of space over there and a few restaurants etc.. within walking distance so you won't need to move the truck/trailer once you get situated. The hotel is right behind the Cracker Barrel. Also they are right off of I74 and few minutes closer to Indy than Peoria. I'm looking forward to meeting you in person!

Well Everyone, I'm out!
Apparently I must have angered the Mopar gods and am being Smited (sp?)
The engine has been back in the Bird for well over a week, Saturday was supposed to be the start up day, but my wife ended up in the hospital, so i was postponed again. Yesterday finally was the day, We pre-lubed the engine, filled the carb with gas, and cranked it up! It fired and ran perfectly!
after about 25 minutes though, we started to hear some unnatural noises and shut it down. I pulled off the valve covers and have catastrophic valvetrain/rocker arm failure on both banks.
Needless to say the car will not be going to Indy next week. and the engine will likely have to come back out.
I haven't cancelled my hotel yet, and may go over for a day to see you fine folks If I can get into the speedway, but sorry Doug, there will be one less confirmed car at the show.

Scott,
You have been working as hard as any of us trying to get that Superbird together for this meet! Not to mention your wifes illness. You have also taken the time out to take pictures and write updates that many of us have been thrilled to follow! Bring the Superbird and I'll be the first to help unload it and push it into place! I've had fuel delivery problems with our Daytona early on and had to be pushed a couple of times myself! When it comes time for the parade lap we should try to put it on a NASCAR flatbed and run with us! DON"T STOP NOW! Doug will have his 100 AERO cars!

Hello Stuart,

Well - it has been a long time since I've talked to you.  Sort of been under the weather here, ( knife )  Wish I could make it to the brickyard but just had surgery on the 15 Th.

We're trying to find out about getting extra tickets.  Do you know of anyone who might have extra tickets?  Rich is trying to get Brian, his wife Tina and two of our grandsons, Rick (son) and a good friend into the infield. Of course he'll have the 4 complimentary tickets, (I hope) for the Bird but we haven't gotten word on extras or cost.   Do you know of a good site to order tickets?  I've been told there are always extra tickets at this event.  Hopefully that's true.   Usually we all know people who bunk, share and exchange about every thing, at least as far as I can remember.   Maybe I should clarify that "every thing"  LOL.

Rick, (the son) will be driving a pick up truck and you know that  we could haul (your part) for you, if you have a way of transporting the ITEM home -----

Rick, (the son) will be driving a pick up truck and you know that  we could haul (your part) for you, if you have a way of transporting the ITEM home -----

yes i'm trailering the bird so i could strap the nose down to the trailer , or maybe even get it inside the car since the top goes down , please if you can have rick bring it ......

Maybe I'll try to get a ride in the Birdable Doug, sounds like you have a long way to go, and if Stuart is full, sounds like Danny can hook me up as well

I assume everyone here has now registered.    The deadline to have your forms in to IMS is Wednesday.    Katie from IMS will be emailing information to participants by then, if not sooner.

Hey Doug,
Should I have heard from Katie yet or is it still a work in progress and I need to be patient?

She has not sent out anything yet.    She closed the registration Wednesday night, and was going to send me all the credentials and tickets.   I expect we will hear from her shortly.

Yeah it must, but then again you have a back up wing car too Doug. Maybe if were to change my name to "Doug" I could get multiple wing cars, but you guys don't have the wing car I want though. Hmmm.

And am I still the only one who didn't get an email back from the track? I did get one to comfirm the info i sent them a few weeks ago, but nothing about a plan or any more infomation as to when we should get there or any of that. I have what Doug posted on the first few pages written down but not sure if it has changed at all since then.

Well gang, the Mopar gods have struck again   :brickwall:  What have you started Scott? (don't take that serious, I'm just kidding).  I was so sorry to hear about your motor cratering and your wife (by the way, what is broken in your photo?  I don't see it).

I had just finished installing tubular upper A-arms with dual shocks each side and was driving it over to the alignment shop and the tranny (727 auto) puked halfway there. It never seemed to be running properly since I won it, it ran really sluggish, but it has been getting me there. I called a tow truck and took it over to our city's most reputable transmission shop.  I just got word that it is history and they can rebuild it back to stock condition for around $1.5k and it wouldn't be ready until Wednesday at the earliest (I live in the middle of nowhere Texas and everything has to be shipped in).  I was planning on being most of the way there by Wednesday evening!

Plus, I hate the idea of a "stock" transmission.  For that kinda money I can get a Streetfighter package (or similar) and really wake the car up.  I've been tossing around the idea of converting it over to a manual tranny to fit the racing theme anyway.  I'd hate to spend that much money on a temporary transmission and then convert over to manual.

I just saw a 727 Torqueflight on Craigslist nearby for $400 and I'm waiting for a call back.  I wouldn't mind slapping in something that cheap temporarily but I'd have to thrash to get it done for the trip.

Oh, what to do?  I really don't want to miss the opportunity to drive at Indy!!!  :'(

Goodyear recommends up to 10 psi over the rated sidewall pressure on their Marathon ST tires for sustained travel over 65.   A little extra air pressure won't hurt.

Correct!  I learned that my pressure gauge actually read 10 lbs. high.  Got a new gauge and added 15lbs..  Rides much better now.  Thanks,  Bob

More tires go bad from low pressure, more than anything. This little" warm spell" we are having makes it a lot worse My trailer tires are 16in,carry 100 lbs.

The guy at the tire store said that they've had a ton of tires go bad during this "warm spell" due to the hot pavement.  Probably pressure problems too.

We will have fun.....This is definitely a bucket list thing for us and I'm thankful to the elite "wing people" for letting a lowly '68 join their ranks.  Bob

I will say this about the AERO car community. They are the nicest bunch of people I have ever met at all of the car shows I have ever attended. I would say that is because there is still a large portion of them that have owned these cars since the mid 70's to early 80's before the prices really went crazy.

The E-mail from IMS mentions the time for "participant track laps" on Saturday only.  I assume that means that there will none on race day.  I'm not complaining by any means, but I had told people to watch the race to see if we make it on TV.  I guess I'll make contact with them and change the TV chance to Saturday.   Bob

Regarding Saturday vs Sunday - remember NASCAR runs the show.

Several of their concerns, which could be the reason for Saturday are...  a) timing - getting cars on and off the track b) manpower of clearing lanes from the corral to the track, and c) fluid dumps - they want to keep the track clean.

IF a NASCAR official can observe Saturday's parade laps (and how you find a NASCAR official on Saturday beats me) - but IF they see a really smooth, well organized Saturday parade lap - and a word of encouragement "we could do the same thing on Sunday" - you never know the outcome.

As a result, you might want to consider the following...

1) two people walk with each car to the actual track (from corral to track) to serve as "traffic clearers".  i.e. you help the track with the manpower.   (And if everyone is wearing a similar t-shirt - just a hint)

2) know the mechanical status of your vehicle and know it well.    It doesn't help our image to have a 2.5 mile lap of tranny fluid, coolant, or engine oil around the track.   IT"S ALSO a good reason to tell the event coordinator - the Bird's run best at 70mph or greater!

PS  See if you can get two parade laps when you actually go on the track  i.e. "a lot of fans won't have their camera's ready the first time, and the fans will appreciate a second chance"

Saturday will be the track lap for everyone.   I checked on the Sunday lap over the weekend.   For Sunday, the track wants 10 to 15 cars  with a preference towards the loud ones with racing numbers on the sides.   It is still a schedule permitting deal.  That is likely how it is going to work.    I would still suggest we do everything we can to make Saturday as smooth as possible.

The Sunday race tickets have arrived.     They are nice seats ($85 ticket) in the turn 2 SE Vista.       I will distribute these and the parking passes at the Wingate.

For Sunday, the track wants 10 to 15 cars  with a preference towards the loud ones with racing numbers on the sides.

Cool!!  I have a Dewalt drill in the trunk.  I just have to charge the battery and then should be good to go.  Would a combination of sheet metal screws and super glue be sufficient?  Bob

it's been a little balmy here in the indy area. you could just lay some tar paper on top of the quarters and hot melt a wing in place. i wish that was as much an exaggeration as it sounds, but it has definitely been a blast furnace lately.

here's to hoping the miserably hot weather is gone by the end of the week.

Most of this you have already seen this, but for the few whose emails I don't have or have bounced, here it is...

I have received the race tickets and passes from Katie Schultz at IMS and will begin distributing them at the Wingate hotel Thursday evening.    We will have the event T-shirts there too which are killer.   Please stop by and check in.   The address is 5797 Rockville Rd, Indianapolis 46241.      The Sunday race tickets are in the SE Vista which is turn 2.

Route to the race track from the Wingate (about 4 miles).
Turn right on Rockville Rd and proceed east to Lynhurst.
Turn left on Lynhurst and go north to 10th St.
Turn right on 10th and proceed east to Tibbs Ave,
Turn left on Tibbs and proceed north to 16th St.
Turn left on 16th St and proceed west to the race track.
Tunnel entry to the track is on your right.
Once inside the tunnel, follow the road to the left and go around the left side of the museum.
Follow the road north 1/4 mile and the show field will be on your left.

Friday we will be leaving for the track at 6:30 am.    If you are arriving in town AFTER we have left for the race track on Friday morning, I will have your envelope available at the front desk of the Wingate.   In the packet will be the infield parking pass for your show car and your event tickets.     If you plan to arrive after 8 AM on Friday, that is OK.   I have clarified with the track that cars will be arriving throughout the day.   The show runs til 4:00 so if you are arriving after 1 PM, I would consider going straight to your hotel.    We will be set up at the Wingate hospitality room in the evening.

Saturday we will be leaving for the track at 6:30 am.    All show cars must be placed on the show field by 8 AM.   This is not flexible, so please plan your schedule accordingly.      Please be back to your car by 3:45 PM to stage for the parade lap which will take place as soon as qualifying ends.  Should be at about 4:30, and it will be nice to do the lap with some people in the stands.

Sunday we will leave for the track at 5:00 AM.     Show cars need to be placed by 6 AM which is when the gates open.  There will be a race car only parade lap at 9:45, pending NASCAR.   We will leave the show display intact until the green flag drops.   Once inbound race traffic subsides if you would like to leave before the end of the race, you can do so.

As I have said before, this is a unique opportunity.     We are working for IMS this weekend to put on a good show for their crowd, and hopefully get invited back another time.   Katie Schultz is in charge of the show site and getting us situated.    These kind of events are relatively new for the track, so let's be patient and do what we can to make things as easy as possible.    Most of you have attended these events at Talladega repeatedly , and are old pros at this kind of stuff.     It's gonna be warm, so let's hope for some cloud cover.

As always, you can reach me on my cell at 414-687-2489.

See you in a few days,

Doug Schellinger

Only if I get the rebel flag on top of the roof............. Oh wait... This isn't Darlington or Talladega............. Never mind........ I'll watch from a distance...  Maybe next time I'll bring my Joe-Dirt C500......

Doug, I'm sure you've mentioned this before, but for those watching the race and displaying our cars, any loading will be done after the end of the race? If so, I take it we can just hang out until the traffic volume around the track is reduced... Last I thing I want is to be heading back to Danny's in a traffic jam....

Troy, assuming you do not want to stay for the finish, you can drive out shortly after the green flag drops.     If you do stay for the end, I would still try to get the car outside the oval or else plan to hang there for a while.

This may not be possible, but perhaps Katie could help arrange it.

The number of cars allowed to park in the infield is far fewer these days than in years past, due to part of the golf course being inside the track. Most vehicles will exit using the (main) south tunnel (hulman blvd) and could be forced to head west towards the interstate. That is where the traffic will be jammed, especially headed south. The north tunnel would be the next busiest but it exits out into the worst of the traffic trying to exit from the parking lots.

There is a backstretch tunnel that leads to 16th street just east of the track (where the old motel used to be). If the track could coordinate something with the traffic police, they could bring everyone out in a convey to turn east on 16th street. Olin road is just a few hundred feet east of there, and curves around a refinery to access Holt Road. Holt goes all the way south to Kentucky avenue (aka IND 67), which is the road back to danny's. This route avoids all of the construction at the 465/70 interchange, and should keep the cars moving.

Holt Road is also a easy, direct route to Interstate 70 for those who need that interstate. I live out east of Indy and this is how I have always gotten to and from the track. If someone needs to head west on i-70, the traffic should be far better on 70 than on i-465.

Even if someone wanted to head west on i-70, the traffic should be far better on 70 than on i-465

We will discuss this when we get on the ground down there.    I agree that the south tunnel will be forced to head west.      Sunday, I suspect most of our people will leave before the end of the race, so the traffic may not be a big issue.

Friday and Saturday should be less of an issue.   On Sunday a lot of people will likely leave before the end of the race, so it may not be a big issue.

For those interested and arriving in Indy on Thursday, the nascar hauler festival starts at 5pm.

The haulers then form a parade into the track at 8pm. Makes for a pretty cool sight.

Probably already seen this - but its the Indy Website story about the cars.

The only downer is the story implies the wing cars are part of "Good Guys Rod & Custom Association"  and no mention of the Daytona Superbird or Winged Warriors auto clubs.

Oh, well.

If you happened to watch TRACKSIDE LIVE on Friday night you would have caught a glimpse of my C500 and Troy's Daytona as we hung out with the cars right behind where they were taping for quite a while. I recorded it and we watched it and saw us in the background for about 1/4 of the episode.

Entire weekend was AWSOME. I have to sort through the pics now as I wound up with 1,200 from today alone and I'm thinking close to 2,400 for the entire weekend. I will not bore you guys with the majority of my mundane photo's that only a slight handful would enjoy seeing, but I will resize a few hopefully tomorrow and get them up here.

Here are some pictures from Indy! The first 3 are of the Croxfords B5 blue Superbird. Talk about an extreme makeover! I think Doug has used up 10 years worth of time in the last 2! Getting that 5.7 Hemi in Marty, hosting a national meet and getting the B5 Superbird restored! I like the fact that they left some individuality in the car with the black painted fender scoops! The last picture is of 2 old friends back together again!

So, how did it go!  When did you get on the track?  How many got to go?   What did Kyle Petty think?

Dish the Dirt!

The event went well for the amount of cars there and all the other activities going on. On Saturday we all got to drive on the track after Sprint Cup Qualifying. Someone who was at MUG n BUN while Kyle was there will have to fill you in on that. Here are some more picture of the historic cars of which I think there was around 15 that made laps this morning not to long before the race started!

Speaking of morning, this is what the back of the inside front row suites look like just after 5am! I woke up at 4:15am this morning and got ready, had breakfast and then checked out of the hotel. I got the Superbird out of the trailer and headed for the track. When I got about 4 blocks away the line came to a stop and people were shutting off their cars and getting out!@#$%^&*(! I waited a short time and decided to go around the parked cars and a tor red Superbird followed me. When we got up by the track the line of cars ended and we drove right in! WOW! I then opened the drivers door half way and got a pillow and went back to sleep until 7am and when I woke up there were Superbirds on both sides of mine!
That's it for tonight I'm toast!

we're home safely here...no issues whatsoever for the 'bird which was THRASHED together after sleeping for 19 months!  We're really pleased with how the car came out and appreciate all the kind things said about it!

Marty decided to spit out a bad brake caliper, but I'm sure someone has some pics of that getting changed...under the hotel awning...at night

We're getting ready to leave the hotel now.  A great big thanks to Doug!!!  This event turned into something much larger than expected and he rose to the task.  Good job Doug and a pleasure to meet you and many others.  I may even want a winged car now.  Bob

I wish everyone a safe and fun trip home.I am glad you all had a good time.I was a little more than disappointed in the fact that everyone took the time and spent the money to travel all the way there and the media didn't so much as mention it on any of the TV shows that I watched.I couldn't be there and watched every race show I could wanting to see the cars.I wonder if they have a clue of what they had there in front of them.I am kind of glad I couldn't make it.  :RantExplode: OK done with that...it seems everyone enjoyed it and that is good enough for me.If I would have made it I think I would have enjoyed that old drive in the most any way and Kyle coming by would have just been the best.

All, Indy was awesome! even with no wing car there. My personal thanks again to the Croxford family and Mopar John for adopting me for a couple of days and driving me around in their wing cars, Our cruise director Sherri, who finds all of these great places to go, and everyone else it takes to put on an event like this.
I also wanted to send out a special thanks to Doug Schellinger. Organizing and putting on a meet like this is no small task and I'm sure many people spent long hours to make it the great success that it was in only six weeks of prep time, but I always saw Doug fully engaged in running the even from first light (and sometimes before) each day , and closing down the host room by the lobby each night after many had already gone to their room for the night. This man is a DSAC club event running machine, and probably got about 6 hours of sleep the entire weekend!
So, Thanks Doug for another great event, and as always am looking forward to the next one!
Scott

I will try to figure out how to post some picts. later, I fell asleep last night trying to download them and catch up on the internet.

I think I might have had 5 hrs of sleep each night at the most.

I have a really great picture of Kyle and Rutledge at the M&B.

They were both super nice and kind enough to put up with all of us wanting pictures and autographs....which they did until their order was completed and then they returned to their car to eat and we all left them alone at that point.

What a memorable moment seeing them like that,  there was also a guy from PRN radio there Friday night that we had a really nice visit with.

The whole weekend was super great the staff at the track was so very nice and polite, it was a wonderful experience.  A lap for all cars on Sunday would have been a great bonus, but we were never promised that and we did have the Sat. lap and those that were still in the stands were whooping it up and loved it and the crowds leaving the track loved the cars as they left the track right after that lap.....cameras clicking and lots of comments.

Also Sunday morning local news was out there for an interview and I also met a guy that was doing video for Austrian/German coverage.....Ausvos or something like that.

We had more coverage than we normally do at Talladega.

This guy also looked realllll familiar. He said something about "liking them all", but that he really liked Talladegas. You know, for a fan, he was kinda overdressed for a NASCAR race. He also had one heckuva fancy golf cart too.

At the track, you see lots of fans dressed up with their favorite team wear. These guys said they heard there were some Mercurys on display and high tailed it over. They said their Uncle Leonard used to be a mechanic and really likes those cars too. They brought him over the next day.    For some reason, there were an awful lot of people that wanted their picture taken with Uncle Leonard.    Leonard also brought a buddy named Dale with him.   I didn't catch the last name, but I heard that Dale used to be a really good Plymouth mechanic.

Kyle actually approached one of the car owners at the drive in and asked if it was her car.    Actually, everyone was very gracious.  Steve Hmiel came over and looked over the 7 car for 15 minutes with me.  Steve worked as a fabricator for Petty Enterprises when he was just getting started in racing.   It was neat that these people came over from the garage area to see the cars.   And it wasn't like they were next door either.

Great pictures guys!  We made it into Peoria for tonight and on to Omaha tomorrow.  Lost another trailer tire 15 miles out of Indy, with all the others starting to separate.  Replaced all of them, including the spare.  I guess tires cannot take sitting out in the northwest temp. extremes for several years and then go on a 4,000+ mile trip at highway speeds.  When opening the trunk of the Charger to get my lug wrench, I discovered I had left my big tool box under the bathroom sink in the hotel.  I hate getting old!!  Bob

Danny, hope you don't mind, but I thought these were good pictures of you and Dakota...  Great family experience... It was wonderful to see Dakota and Jacob having fun with each other. Both really seemed to enjoy themselves and get into the total spirit of the race and their favorite drivers...

Anyone remember the url for the photos that were being taken by Track photographers throughout the weekend? They worked for the track, but can't see them all. I see some links, but that don't have many of the vintage cars... The lady taking the pictures assured me they would be loaded to view....

It was great to meet a lot of you guys in person at the IMS get together. First I must THANK Troy for the invitation to join him and Jacob to such a great event. It was my first Nascar Cup race and wing car event and both proved to be AWESOME! We had a great time getting our mugs and Troy and Danny's cars on TV at the Speed Network setup. Speaking of mugs, we were lucky enough to be there when Rutledge Wood and Kyle Petty arrived at the Mug and Bun for a bite of chow. Friendly pair of fellows who autographed anything you wanted and posed for pictures that will last a life time.
I must also THANK Danny and wife, Bobbie, for their hospitality in offering their house for us to lay our tired bodies to rest. It sure was a blessing and really saved us some much needed Mopar cash.. THANK YOU! Hopefully I can return the favor some day.
I would also like to say I was looking forward to meeting Gary and Pam (and did) and getting a chance to see that AWESOME 71 Daytona! It was a magnet for me as I would someday hopefully win the lottery and convert my 71 "Mr. Norm's" Charger R/T to one like that. AWESOME car guys and it was great meeting the two of you.
Next THANKS to all you guys that brought out your cars. It really seemed to be a great turnout. I hope we did not rumble any feathers trying to help out with parking so many vehicles in a tight area, but we did the best we could to keep everyone together with their friends cars. It was a matter of timing.
Thanks to NASCAR and IMS for the show, although another 100 mph added to our parade lap would have been a hoot! Love to see those wing cars on a place they were built to be. Nothing finer than a Charger 500 and a Daytona playing chase with the Talledega's.
And last but not least my lovely wife for allowing me to miss our 29th wedding anniversary to have one of the greatest times of my life. Love to You!
And THANK God for a safe and pleasant trip on the road from Houston and back.
I hope we can have something similar at Texas Motor Speedway in Ft. Worth, Texas.

H.C. "Tuffy" Weaver Jr.

Well Doug,

Now that you're back from Indy have you received any feedback from Katie or another Indy promoter that they were impressed with your efforts of organizing something like this at the last minute?  I'm assuming that the gang behaved themselves (I haven't seen anything in the posts that were negative) and made the DSAC look good.  Sounds like ya'll had a blast other than the heat wave.

Maybe they'll invite us back again?

Also, one more question...what speed were the parade laps? Was it 30 mph like Talladega?

I'm still really depressed that I had to miss it.     :brickwall:    At least it died here and not up there. I was actually on schedule this time and not thrashing at the last second.

I was over 60 on the back straight, but not sure how acurate the speedometer is.  I know I thanked Doug Kadie for her efforts and would like to thank Doug again.  Both my dad and I had a blast.  I don't remember spending better time with him any other time.  Enjoyed spending some time with Stuart and his family and glad to see he is taking care of his health.  In short the best weekend I have had in a long long time.  The only thing that could of made it better is high of 79 degrees lowes of 65

Phil, the street Petty Bird was a substitute.   The owner has a 64 Plymouth built by Pettys Garage.  It was supposed to be there at IMS, but Petty's guys were doing something with it.   He brought three Birds to the meet, so I slotted his blue car in as a substitute.   All the cars on the parade lap had owner bios tied to them for the PA.

The Parsons Torino was the only other real GN Ford.   The rest were modern street stock type replicas.   The #17 Pearson "Talladega" was the best looking of the bunch.   It has a fairly convincing home built Talladega front clip.

                                              THE BRICKYARD 400 RACE!
Well, it was very hot and I had plans to watch the whole race@#$%! It was nice to see our AERO cars do the parade lap just before the race! I hope they have us back? There were 4 Dodges on the entry list #2 Brad Keselowski ( MY FAVORITE  see attached picture of my wing decal! ), #7 Robby Gordon, #22 Kurt Busch and #77 Scott Wimmer. The number 77 car did not make the field so we were down to 3 Dodges with little hope of Robby Gordon doing much. I was sitting with Troy and Danny and their sons at the beginning of the race. Danny's boy was very happy with Kasey Kahne in the #4 leading many laps at the beginning! Robby Gordon fell back and finished dead last@#$%(! Kurt started 4th and Brad 5th. As the race went on Kurt got into some trouble and damaged his Dodge while Brad fell back to 12th or so. As people started to leave I started moving down and closer to the exit isle. It's funny the things you learn! I realized that when someone got up to leave that was the time to move to their seat before the sun turned it into an oven that my body would have to cool down! :flame:
With about 1/3 of the race to go I ended up with an isle seat just behind fellow B5/B7 Daytona owners George and Linda Barnick. It was about this time there was a caution and Brad in the #2 Dodge stayed out! I thought he was just going after the lap led bonus points. But he stayed out and led quite a few laps before pitting! He came out 23rd and was just behind Tony Stewart who was having a bad day and driving the wheels off his Chevy! They were passing quite a few cars and ran out of time. Tony finished 6th and Brad 9th!

By the time the race was over the Brickyard was half empty already! I started the long walk back to the Superbird. When I got to the area where the haulers were they were getting ready to load Brads #2 Dodge! It was parked right on the end by the isle. I took a couple of pictures and couldn't believe what great condition the car was in after running the race! My brother in law and nephew were down with me on Saturday for the parade lap. They go every year and have pit and garage passes. I was able to borrow the passes and check things out. They also surprised me with a Brad Keselowski hat that they waited in line and had autographed for me! What a great weekend it was! I was also excited that Brad won at Pocono and has a very good chance at one of the Chase wildcards with 2 wins! :2thumbs:

The best way will probably to come back here and see when Doug posts the announcement or join his club. Those are usually the best modes of communication.

Doug's the A-team when it comes to this sort of stuff......

well ok that worked. i built my car from a sport satellite using janak parts except for the rear window and the A pillar trim. it is not a clone it is a look-a-like. i restored the car from the ground up. replacing both qtr panels, outer wheel houses, trunk ext and center of trunk. i found a 70 cornet and had the hood made while i did the fenders. i used all the trim from the sport satellite and the original 383. i  added a 6pk,alum heads, alum rad, tti exh and a keisler 5spd, also decked the block for some more comp. the car is not badged as a superbird. pearl white, black vinyl top and craigars. the chrome and stainless trim really add to the look of the car. i built the car so we could drive it, and we do. we live in az the longest trip as be to san fran. on the highway running 65 or 85 i always get 22mpg. it's a gas to drive, all the paint chips and window chips prove that. how do i post pics?

could have happened to us stolen from a hotel parking lot

ndianapolis, IN – Indianapolis State Police said a 1932 Ford three-window coupe reported stolen to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department yesterday apparently became too hot to handle after it was featured on a local Indianapolis TV news station.  The Deuce hot rod, reportedly worth $300,000, was allegedly stolen sometime Sept. 16 from a car hauler while in the parking lot of the Wyndham West hotel parking lot.

A concerned citizen saw what he thought was the vehicle sitting in the driveway of a vacant home in the 6100 block of Epperson on the southwest side of Indianapolis.  The citizen called his friend, a state police undercover officer assigned to Vehicle Crimes Unit, who went to the address and discovered the vehicle in the driveway.  A quick check of the vehicle's VIN determined it was the stolen vehicle.

Earlier this week, a representative for the Deuce coupe's owner, Jason Smith, was reunited with the coupe at the Indianapolis State Police Post.  The car was supposed to have been displayed at the Good Guys car show held this weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The circumstances of the theft are still under investigation by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and the Indiana State Police.

Saddest of all epilogues... RIP Dan Wheldon.  He's signing autographs at the Brickyard for fans, and mine's hanging in my office.

I can't remember a major professional race ever being cancelled because of a fatality.   What a major downer for the end of the Indy Car season.

I had never heard of a major race being canceled either. The deaths of Dave MacDonald & Eddie Sachs in a fiery crash at the 500 in 1964 was the worst I can recall....................RIP Dan Weldon!

I think they probably realized that was not the idea venue for Indy cars.  I wonder how long it would take to get the track ready to race after that crash?

Yes, they are $15 each or 2 for $25 or 3 for $35 if you dare.   You can mix and match them with the Talladega 2009 shirt and the Cleveland 2010 shirt.  Shipping is a flat $4.95   Believe I have L, XL, 2XL and possibly a 3XL left.

I still have to check the car trailer as I only had L, XL and 2XLs in the garage.  You would think this would be easy, but I have had kid stuff going on all weekend and last night we finished the club newsletters for mailing today.       I'm sorry for the delay.
