"Correct" Daytona Tires

Could I get some feedback, hopefully factual, regarding the most correct redline tire for a Daytona? I'm finding that there are claims that both Goodyear and Firestone were used. I'm referring to the F70-14, T83 or T85. Daytona build date: 5 15.

Thanks

Goodyear is going back on mine, which is what Dad said was on it when he picked it up at the dealership.

Code T83   Build date 605

My Daytona - I think the spare tire is the original that came with...I got the car in June, 1978.

The 7 digit code says built April of 1969 in Akron, Ohio.

Goodyear Custom Wide Tread Polyglas F70-14 redline - same as in the photo sent by Held...

Hi Bob,        18 Sep 25

I thought all Daytona's came with 15 inch tires. Our 68 Hemi RR had 15 inch Goodyear redlines, our 69 Super Bee 440 Six-Pack came with 15 inch Goodyear red lines.

I remember the day we were driving our 69 Hemi Daytona (Now your Hemi Daytona) home. We hadn't gone far and were pulled over by an Ohio State Patrolman. We hadn't gotten 5 miles when we were stopped. Turns out the patrolman just wanted to look at the car.

Of all the cars we've had, that was my favorite .... until Dena bought her Race Red Mustang Dark Horse 6 Speed. Now it's a tie. I still think the Daytona would win in a flat out run. I had her to 140 on I-75 in the U.P. of Michigan. It felt like she was doing the driving, solid as a rock. Thought I was imagining it until years later in one of your posts you mentioned talking to the NASCARr friend of yours. You asked him what it was like driving a Daytona on the super speedways. You quoted him as saying: "They drove themselves." That's when I realized I hadn't been imagining the Daytona driving itself. Those were the days.

Take Care Amigo; God Bless. Please give the Old gal a love pat for me.

Hi Ernie,           21 Sep 25

We have a Six-Pack that came with 15 inch Goodyear redlines, 9.75 in Dana rear end with Posi and an auto tran. I'm assuming 6-BBL Plymouths were the same. Almost forgot: No hubcaps, only large Chrome lug nuts.

Hemi & 6-pak cars came with 15" wheels.

I suspect it was because of the deep oil pans & skid plates.  I've heard that the Hemi cars also got an extra metal plate under the front bumpstops (to raise them up a bit).  I'm not sure about the 6pk cars but I would assume they also got the plates.

If the front wheel/tires are bigger then the skid plate is less likely to be dragged on a hard suspension compression.

Hi Mike,          22 Sep 25

Our 6-PK did not have a skid plate nor did it have a deep oil pan like our Hemi RR. It has one now because we transplanted our RR Hemi into it.

When we were driving the Hemi RR, we had 383 badges in the hood and someone had stolen the Hemi badge off the trunk while it belonged to Westside Plymouth. We removed the chrome exhaust tips replacing them with round tubes out the back.

Never found any metal plates behind the front bumpers of either car.

Every once in a while when we pulled into a drive-in we'd see someone lean out of their car to look under our RR. The big giveaways were the 15" wheels, orange oil-pan, skid-plate and the sound. Less noticeable were the Torque Boxes and the Auto Tranny oil cooler just in front of the extra large radiator. There was also the sound; Hemi's are a class act visually and audibly.

I'm hoping I have enough time remaining to get them (Hemi RR and Dodge Six-Pack) back together so we can have fun driving them before my clock goes into retirement. According to my cardiologist I should last another 20. I'm not in any hurry to find out how accurate her prediction is.

As a side note I had a Nuclear Stress test earlier in the year. They shoot you full of a Radioactive substance, which makes one very radioactive. I was told by a doctor friend that if I wanted to have some fun after the test, I should go to the airport and walk by where they check baggage. He said alarms will go off and they will go nuts looking for the radiation source.

Never tried it but the day I had the test, Dena brought along her geiger counter. She was sitting in the waiting room waiting for me. When I got to the end of the hallway heading for the waiting area her geiger counter went berserk. The closer I got to her, the louder it got. She explained the situation to the folks waiting for their patient. That helped calm them.
