im going to keep it a runner driver until I have the hemi bought and running and ready to go into it
Stu, does this mean you sold the 500? I would have kept the Roadrunner if not. :Twocents:
:Twocents: If I was to want one, I think I would have started from scratch, build it my way ( with my screw ups), then pick and choose what rides I want to keep. Building rods are a little different then rebuilding production cars. :Twocents:
Best of Luck :2thumbs: It does look cool. :2thumbs: Bad thing is, you can't fit all your family in it. I'm one that enjoys tag alongs.

yup the 500 sold 1 week after the road runner left . :brickwall: :brickwall: karma kicked me in the ass on that one. Oh well I still have the convertible and my brothers 70 RR so no worries . Also as soon at the Road Runner left I blew out the tranny in the convertible so thats why I needed a 2nd car ready to roll so when one is down I can hop in the other one . Thats why i wont take this one apart untill the convertible is back on the road and I have a 392 hemi ready to set in it and go .

My youngest son Ian who is 11 now started at a very young age loving Rat Rods . I was not hot on them or even into them at all . He made me watch documentories and he drug me to every one at a show for the last 7 years or so . I have turns around my attitude 100 % the innovation and the little creative thing here and there are what i like about them . I have always wanted a fancy perfect Hemi Steert ROD . So now i have meshed my sons favorite with what i have alway wanted and this will be something we can do together and if we screw something up its the norm with rat rods .. I also like the idea of getting Fleemarket and junk store parts :icon_smile_big: :icon_smile_big: We have the big muscle cars if the whole family wants to ride along , this will be a car we only keep local to kc for shows Ian and I can goto .

Hi guys. I can say there is definitely something to these cars. I went about 70 miles to pick it up. Test driving it and trailering it home was kind of fun and drove me nuts at the same time. On the road test driving was fine. Thumbs up all around. But on the trailer coming home I had people trying to ask questions out the passenger windows. Thumbs up is a well understood sing. Like lifting your middle finger everyone gets it. But yelling shit out the window had me pulling over a few times in worry of a tie down snapped off or worse.. One guy was asking if it was a 31 or 32, but I didn't figure out what he was asking until I had already pulled over to once again check my straps. FYI: I use 2 straps at each end of the car, so when the guy was asking 1 or 2 I took it that I lost a strap...
So, STU,,,, I suggest you put a plate on it that says "31 Nash" just to save the issues.. lol...
I think this hobby is the SCREW THE RICH GUY hobby. We poor people started drag and left turn racing only for it to be taken over by BIG MONEY. Today I cannot afford to compete with anyone drag racing. Moonshiners went to the bone yards for a part with just a bit less wear too. Now it's big money and multiple cars under 1 roof there too. Throws us to the wolves. BUT,,,, RAT RODS are the true poor mans fun hobby that the rich probably won't mess with. I might even be able to build one, but with my back it would have to be a truck.. 2 times in and out of Stu's Nash and I was ready for my bag of pills.... Good luck with the new hobby Stu. You and your son will have a blast with it I'm sure... ;)
how loud were the pipes steve? :shruggy:

You and your son will have a blast with it I'm sure... ;)
Steve I cant thank you enought for what you did and storing it for me . Especially for a guy you have never met in person .. Steve is a great credit to our MOPAR Hobbie helping me out bad back and all .       :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

I think the AHHOOGA horn should be replaced with TRAIN HORNS.. But that's just me.. ;)
I think he ought to get a wolf whistle
I hear it's illegal :2thumbs:
RR horn would work too.
No problem Stu. It's been a long time since I've been on the prowl and it felt good. Happy to help out..
Let me know what the shipper says and maybe I can do it for that.. I have no idea what they get anymore, but I would give a damn about what I am hauling and go door to door. Not yard to yard to yard to yard and you might see it in a few months... It's just got to be worth my gas and a nice hotel for the WIFE and I.. lol... And it is already loaded!!!! :icon_smile_cool:
Could meet in the middle :Twocents: Afterwords, enjoy the sites of wherever. Mini vacation for everyone.
Steve, we have train horns on all three of our car haulers and I can't imagine relying on those in that rat rod around town. You would sure get pedestrian attention though. :smilielol:
got a great rate of $ 650.00 ,car should be here in early december
Really cool, Stuart. :2thumbs: :2thumbs: I love the Rat Rods. Here is the 42 Dodge truck , The Rod's Shop built in 6 day's with stuff they had laying around the garage. It had a 440, 727 trans and a Dana.
i would love that but of course it would be getting a 50's hemi :icon_smile_big:
so you already have a transporter locked on. good for you. thats a great price. :2thumbs:

actually i just cobbled onto the guy who is already coming to get one of my cars i sold . Its going to maryland so he gave me a better rate i'm sure because of that . He was already headed to florida for the thanksgiving turkey rod run at the speedway so that helped too. I should have it the first week of december . But you know transporter i wont hold my breath . Being that steve has it safe i sleep alot better and wont be biting my nails .
ive actually done that when my buddy bought a mustang from north carolina. couldnt get anyone to take the bid so i took his cash and went to get it. enjoy the road trips, and we got to do some antique shopping on the way. had a good time and he paid the expences. :2thumbs:

i'm a cheap skate , way more then your buddy :D
oh not really. he paid 600.00 i grabbed my car trailer and the wife and i hit the road. made a 3 day mini vacation out of it picking up the car sunday morning and driving back straight through. we got to hit antique stores we havent seen and got to take our time on the trip. if you have things to do on the way, it isnt so much a job, but a fun trip. i think gas hit us for about 350.00 and paying for hotels didnt leave much for the food, we did fast food except for breakfast, where we like to sit down and relax. but i figure if someone is paying my gas, hotel and food so i can go on an antique shopping trip, i guess i can pick a car up for them while im out there. :smilielol:
Sounds like a winner to me :2thumbs:
If I had something to bring back this way I could do it for cheap, but my truck is a guzzler and I figure about $400.00 in gas each way... I need Ron's diesel.....

ok HELP !! any ensight into insurance on Hot Rods / Rats Rods ? I called my Insurance company American Collectors and they want 350.00 bucks a years for only 15 k coverage on this thing ? I only pay 290.00 a year for 55 k coverage with them on the Birdible . Any company specialize in these cars that will be more realistic ??
THanks
ive had good luck with Grundy. and I know a buddy with a fiberglass tbucket covered through there with good luck as well.
I have Grundy on my challenger Stuart and I am happy with my rate.Give em a try
Just pay $60,000 to the state of Missouri and you don't need insurance. Pocket change, right?

No kidding? I pay almost $300/year for my Charger with Hagerty and it's valued at $20K. How did you get such a good rate?
I have heard really good and really bad rates. It seams that maybe we should start a thread on insurance and sticky that.. I know they look at all cars on their own merit, but I don't know how they would figure out RAT RADS....
I do know if it is a daily driver it will be much more than a show or weekend driver.

I like that idea. It will give insured members the chance to see if they can do better and the ones looking for a deal the best one out there. I think $300 a year is pretty cheap but hey, maybe I can get an extra tank of gas out of it! :icon_smile_big:
I'll ask Rod about his Rat Rod. But I'm betting they insure it thru the business. :shruggy:

No need buddy... But you are gonna love this. NOW my daughter wants to SELL that car and find something newer with less miles... It kills me man. With my back I cannot work on all these little shit boxes. Too much time in bad positions for me. So a simple oil leak is driving her out of this car. The real pisser is I can't even see where the leak is and this thing has more oil seals than 3 of our mighty muscle cars. And HOLY CRAP, the amount of VACUUM LINES!!!!!! :o

Yep, that is our older daughter Kristina. She was over cleaning the house and spotted the car back on the trailer. I figured it was a good time to pop off a few pics..
As far as human fitment goes, O M G!!!!!! People back in the 30's had to have been midgets!!! Yeah, I know the top has been chopped, but if it had been 2 feet taller it still would have no room for a linebacker like me.. I have had less trouble climbing in and out of a full on drag car..
Like everything else there will be some things Stu will need to address, but for the most part this car is exactly what a RAT ROD is... Myself, Rat Rod is ok BUT,,, for me,,,, I would have to split the body down the center and widen it by at least a foot. You all know I have issues with my back and legs, but peddle room in this car is NIL. I can't wait to see what changes Stu and son make to her.. Of course the 392 HEMI will make a wonderful change. A MOPAR rear end would be a must for me also.. That Camparo rear chunk has to go.. hahahaha...

It's really not bad if you are under 5 feet tall... lol.... I drove it once again around the block just to say I did and then up onto the trailer. I had to drive it with the drivers door open so I had room for my "brake foot", but I believe with some better planning this car is very doable even for my with my bad back... For around the block anyway!!!! :D

EXCELLENT !!!!! You must be more flexible than I. When I went around the block I had to hold the drivers side door open to be capable of using my left foot on the brake. I think if I were to build one it would have to be a deeper cab. Or the firewall would need to be pushed forward.. Plus a LAZY-BOY would have to be added.. ;)

Will you be able to keep your hood ornament/ radiator cap?
even though the current seats fit well and look great i need to save as much room as possible
so i bought some air craft jump seats , they fit the theme well too and will save me a few inches , plus they fold forward for access behind the seats to the radio and minimal storage

Sort of where I was going with (WHO KNOWS), Stu. The way I understand it, the RAT RIDE craze is like the HOT ROD craze of yesteryear. Make due and run what ya brung... I love that about it and that it's a DARE TO BE DIFFERENT kind of thing... When it starts going to $100,000 bodies and $30,K frames the RICH win again.. Just like drag racing. Roundy-round. Parts and flipping.. Just look at any auction....
Stick to your cheap "in mind" ideals. Hell, I'm thinking about cutting one of my Dana's. Building a longer frame and dropping a 440" between the rails and adding the hood from my JOHN DEERE tractor.
A rad. to fit in that grill would really be a bitch!! :scratchchin:

Hey Stu, do you have a scale at work?? I'd love to know what that RAT weighs...
So there is a foot well under the tank?? I wondered how the original car was set up. That lid may even be strong enough to have a seat fabbed for it. It's built pretty heavy. Plus I have only seen 1 in my life and I believe the base and back of the seat were directly riveted to the hinges. Then you could just cut out the wall between and extend the steering shaft and drive the back seat!!! hahahahahahahaa.... No more hear room troubles... :D

I don't think it does on that grille, those are more typically slats not tubes. The V16 Cadillacs spring foremost into mind with that feature but it was on other models too.

do you have the brown leather bomber jacket to go with it? If not, go to RT Foster art. He can make one up for you with custom touches. He mostly does airplanes, but he'll do custom car work as well. Everyonce in a while, he'll do pinup girls. :drool5: I can't show you the pinup girl for my air cleaner :drool5: :drool5:
http://rtfosterart.com/wordpress/nggallery/page-202/
Very reasonable on prices. I paid $150 for my custom pinup gal decal. Hand painted and clear coated ready for me to pit it on. If you send him stuff, he can paint it without making it a decal. Had it within a week of payment after a couple of emails.

I forgot i need a cap for the end of my keg overflow bottle too
:drool5: :drool5: :drool5: :drool5:
Stu, you might ask Jerry Stricker. I know he has a couple of them.
I found a guy in central illinois who is now building me a 392 hemi . He builds several a year just as a past time.
So he is building it for exactly what i can afford and he is letting me choose the cam a mild lope to it and other things to taylor it to the nash.
Exactly the look and options i want it will have the tranny adapter to bolt it right up to the nash and distributor and alternator set up just like the nash already has so it
will be an easy bolt in set up I will just have to weld in the front motor mounts
this is the 392 i picked because he is in the process of getting ready to assemble it and i could pick out the 340 mopar high volumn fuel pump and the Isky Cam .
I also got the driverside door mirror made today
this is an old challenger flip top gas cap that was nasty pitted and broken .
:2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs:
:popcrn: :popcrn: :popcrn:
:2thumbs:
the nash has the motor mounts on the front of the motor
so it i will have to figure out if i wanna mount the hemi off the front the the 350 or off the side standard motor mounts
:2thumbs: :2thumbs:
:drool5: :drool5: :drool5:22 inches from the tranny to the front of the 350 chevy where the mount bolts
Congrats on finding a Hemi  Mirror looks good as well :drool5: Are you keeping the maltese crosses on there as well?

yes i can have them at a different angle , the thing is hard to see out of so they both help
the hemi builder in illinois also raises elk and has an elk farm
:2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs: this is keith the builders personal hemi , he is building me an alternator bracket like this one
to mount my GM 1 wire alterator
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hurst-Style-Mounts-Desoto-Firedome-Chrysler-Hemi-331-/181085773134
these may work out great for me

Oh, come on!!! Open up the kids college fund and get the Hilborn injection.
:popcrn: :popcrn: these are other motors kieth is building or has ready but i wanted to pick out a little bigger cam then stock so
i chose to pick the 57 392 with the yellow valve covers

look at where the side mounting bosses are on the bare block
and where my mount is
at some point i would love to be able to afford some old NHRA style aluminum valve covers with the dual breathers on top
but they are very expensive , but someday i'll add them i love that look
I would also like to buy these headers the have block off and a down tube where i can still run my side pipes

there is a big hole at the end where the tap thing goes . That didnt have a lock ring or any way to keep
it from flopping around . So the flip top covers the hole . I think i may put a Cragar SS 3 spoke spinner on the top center to look like the moon spin off caps . :scratchchin: :scratchchin: still thinking on that one .
My SS spinners i got at a swap meet for 2 bucks pitted and nasty
One will become my radiator cap , the other i think i'll mount on top of the moon tank like a cap . :shruggy:

It might just be me, but I have experienced a motor shaking a (KEEPER NUT) loose and into a 383. The 383 did NOT like it. I don't like ANY CHANCE of ANYTHING being able to go down the hatch other than gas and air.. its not that its really heavy as its aluminum , it the shape and angle , it has to be perfect to get it to fit correctly . So we need at lease three people to get it to go .

i saw an 80-90's Tona with a small block v8 in it one time, LOTS of fab time converting it, wonder why no one every made a kit??
Didn't Mopar Performance have a kit back in the early 90's? I think if someone did a motor swap MOST went all the way and built a full on tube chassis drag car.
Now that is a real motorcycle engine.
I had to settle for a keith black aluminum one. :brickwall:
There is nothing like the original hemi history.
My first intent was cut short cause I sold my 392 to a local fire department to restore an old fire engine.

Future project. Have a 88 and 2 92s. Plus various 360 cores. Plenty of room in the engine compartment.....except for where the steering rack is. Plus adding a rear axle. Yeah, some fab work. OK, a LOTTA fab work. I've seen something online.....after a quick look, did not seem worth the $$$$.

i'm getting ready to make the grille shell for my nash out of pennys , I have enought wheat pennys to
make a ring with them to go around the NASH winged emblem . the rest will be a combination of new and old polished and tarnished . Then i will clear coat them all .
so today i went out and got copper paint to paint the grille shell with , giving it a good base color for the paint to show through the nooks and cranny's
when i adhere the pennies to the grille shell
I put a base coat down of copper paint to fill in the nooks and crannys between the pennies when i glue them on
then i will clear coat them all

no not elmers , I tried several glues and ended up using two different metal bonds , a dab of each
one quick drying to hold it long enough for the longer drying better glue to harden .

They make adaptor plates and bellhousings that will allow a person to bolt up a early hemi to a chevy trans.
Congrats Stu! :2thumbs:
Probably were adaptors at one time to fit the first generation Hemi's in front of a lot of different transmissions. Popular mill during those early experimental days of drag racing.
